El Quetzal Guatemalan Restaurant — latin american in Albany Park. Flavors stay true to the source. Service that's warm without being over the top. "The salsa was a little spicy but tasted very good with the chips" — Evelyn Menzel

Great food and service. We were kind of in a hurry but everything was ready quick and delicious. Had pupusas, empanadas, garnachas, and a margarita. Will definitely come back to try more.

“Ambience was casual & family friendly with cumbias & marimba playing in the background.”
Ambience was casual & family friendly with cumbias & marimba playing in the background. Service was very warm & friendly. Tried the beef Garnachas & the chicken tamale, they were really good. The salsa was a little spicy but tasted very good with the chips. They had so much to choose from!

“Excellent service, food flavor was authentic Guatemalan.”
Excellent service, food flavor was authentic Guatemalan. I had a Carne Adobada and was a month watering flavor. Hand made tortillas. I had also empanadas, atol de elote on that I have to say I didn't like that much. But other than that I love it. Prices ok

“Had a really nice time here and ate some great food.”
Had a really nice time here and ate some great food. The tortillas can fresh and stayed hot for a long time. We did have a bit of a language barrier as the host/waiter didn’t understand too much English but we made do with our broken Spanish. Their beans are super rich and somewhat sweet and I would recommend trying them just for the beans alone. Their guacamole (completely different from typical guac I have had previously) and homemade salsa were incredibly delicious and quite flavorful. The fried chicken I had was incredibly crispy and seasoned well - tastes great dipped in their homemade salsa. There is also an automatic 15% gratuity added onto parties of 5+ although that is on the lower end of established gratuity I’ve seen in a majority of restaurants.

“VIBE: Family oriented, colorful and welcoming.”
VIBE: Family oriented, colorful and welcoming. Lots of beautiful Guatemalan art on display and great music playing. FOOD: The food was very tasty. We got the empanadas, four of the five pupusas they have available, the banana leaf pork tamale [amazing!] and two stews for entrees.. hilaches [shredded beef] and the pepian [chicken]. Everything was hot, fresh and flavorful. STAFF: The server was super sweet and friendly, I got to practice some of my Spanglish while ordering. She earned her tip by personality alone. PARKING/MISC: It's located off a busier part of Lawrence, but even on a Friday night, there were lots of available street parking. I actually forgot to pay for my parking and came back to my car with no ticket. This part of town you really don't need to worry about that, just keep an eye on your car and you should be fine. The ONLY reasons they lose a star is for two reasons.. a.] the bathroom toilet had obviously not been cleaned that evening and a large skid mark was not the best thing to observe before I sat down to eat. I would recommend you guys keep Clorox toilet wand replacements handy because they require less effort and elbow grease to give the bowl a quick clean during down time and the wand heads can be quickly discarded of with no cleaning products needed because they already include the cleaning agent in the sponge b.] because I found two pieces of really long black hair in two separate food items [the empanadas and a pupusa].. to the owner/management, whoever preps the food, please have them wear a hair net. Other than that, a pleasant experience and a great meal.
