Estrella Negra — among the best mexican in Bucktown. Order the chicken flautas. The atmosphere does most of the heavy lifting, and good for vegetarians. "The pozole was the perfect amount of spicy and a must try" — C. G.

“They were so busy though and I accidentally got charged for alcoholic drinks I did not order, but we took some time and figured it out and I will be reimbursed”
I’ve been coming to Estrella Negra for years, but the quality has gone downhill.

The service is consistently outstanding, and the food is authentic, delicious, and made with incredibly fresh ingredients. The meat quality is truly top-notch, and the portions are perfect. The drinks are the cherry on top. Our family of four loves dining here, and it’s also become a favorite spot for spontaneous date nights for my husband and me. Highly recommend!

“If I could give this place more than five stars, I would.”
If I could give this place more than five stars, I would! Everything here is a hit. The guacamole is incredibly fresh, the margaritas are spot on, and honestly the entire menu delivers. We tried the Poblano Surf N Turf burger and the goat cheese quesadilla too both were delicious, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. And whatever you do, don’t skip dessert. Every single one we ordered was amazing, so just do yourself a favor and get them all. This is officially one of my favorite spots. Highly recommend! 🌮🍔🍰🍹

“My experience here was great.”
My experience here was great! The staff was very welcoming and accommodating for my birthday dinner. They placed a candle in the concha ice cream sandwich for me to celebrate, which was appreciated. I recommend the chicken flautas, loaded steak fries, and ginger tea. Everything we ordered was very yummy. I will say for a large party, the seating at the high tops is not the most comfortable, so I recommend groups of 2-6 here. Otherwise this is a lovely spot for dinner or drinks. Also note that the portions are not huge, you’ll definitely be full from an entree but don’t expect leftovers. the prices are a bit high for the portion size, but the quality of the food is great.

We’ve lived a few minutes walk from here for several years and never made it due to it being on kind of a busy road and not the most pleasant walk. But we definitely regret letting that deter us! Everything we had from drinks to apps to dinner was amazing! They offer both traditional dishes (pozole rojo is a must) and creative new takes. The drinks were likewise creative and delicious as was the atmosphere. Artwork everywhere you look, even the tabletops. Don’t miss out on this gem!

“Try the Verde Vegan Pozole.”
Try the Verde Vegan Pozole. I don't know what spices they used, but I didn't mind the lack of meat. It & the rest of our meal was very good!

“The tamarindo chicken wings were fantastic.”
The tamarindo chicken wings were fantastic. Crispy and drenched in that wonderful sweet and tangy sauce. Each tamal in the sampler was unique in its own way. I slowly savored each one. The mezcal Paloma was nearly like the ones I make - smoky with a citrus kick. Only downside was getting the check before I asked for it.

“Really nice place where you might not expect it.”
Really nice place where you might not expect it. We had the empanada sampler, the tamale sampler and the goats cheese quesadilla for food and we had the Paloma, the mezcal mule, the pepino Loko, the lengua de Diablo and the el alacran for drinks. Both the food and the cocktails were tasty, well delivered, tasted fresh and tasted authentic as well. They have us a free shot of a new cocktail they were trying out, which was also really great. We didn't actually feel like they needed to improve but they seem to be keen to keep on top of things. The owner told us the recipes were handed down from his grandparents. The people that own the restaurant are really lovely and very helpful. We're really happy the place we wanted to go to was closed cause this was no doubt better. My partner also felt like it reminded him of when he went to Mexico. I never went to Mexico myself, but I can see how this would feel "real". Really lovely.

“Let me start by saying that this review should’ve been written years ago when I first became a customer.”
Let me start by saying that this review should’ve been written years ago when I first became a customer. Estrella Negra has never once served me a bad meal or given anything less than stellar service. This is the one restaurant I hoped would survive COVID, and they did! I love seeing the changing art on the walls and the new seasonal items they add to the menu. Just dined in with my husband this week and ordered the eloté tamales, mango salsa enchiladas, and the poblano surf n turf burger. Probably the best meal we’ve had yet! Our server Bryan was awesome! He gave great cocktail recommendations and was so attentive. Another excellent dining experience.

Love this place! Can’t believe we waited so long to try it. My husband and I went on a Wednesday and tried out their wing special. They sprinkle goat cheese on theirs which was YUM. One of my favorite wings in the city, now! Also tried the verde salsa, guac, been dip, and flautas. Flautas came with a side of pazole! Everything was killer.

“Absolutely one of my favorite spots in the city.”
Absolutely one of my favorite spots in the city! The food never disappoints, and they're getting better every time we go! They recently took over the back patio space formerly used by Quenchers on Western and Fullerton, so even more seating is available. We caught them during a great event to promote the space, had some amazing food, and listened to some live jazz on a nice Summer afternoon. This is one of those places that your friends always recommend, for good reason!
