Yokocho Handrolls and Omakase Bar — one of West Loop's strongest japanese spots. Nothing about this place is trying to impress you, and that's the point. The cocktail list is worth exploring. "The vibe is more like an American-Japanese bar—lively and dimly lit—but the food was phenomenal" — Piggly Wiggly

The sushi omakase was very mediocre compared to most other sushi places.

“Loved hearing the chef’s inspiration behind the menu and history of different preparation methods”
Food was decent as it should be for the food at this price point. However, the service was HORRIBLE.
“Having been to Tokyo I’m ecstatic Chicago has its own Yokocho and the back alley vibes are perfect here.”
Having been to Tokyo I’m ecstatic Chicago has its own Yokocho and the back alley vibes are perfect here. The nigiri was so good but those shrimp dumplings and the blue crab hand roll wow. The matcha sando was great too. Loved their drinks, especially the celery one. Get it all! Killer happy hour too from 5-7pm @chicagopescetarian

“high quality fish and fantastic happy hour deal ($6 traditional handrolls).”
high quality fish and fantastic happy hour deal ($6 traditional handrolls)! i enjoyed their salmon a lot - it was so fresh and tasty, and it left such a clean aftertaste in my mouth. i’d come back and order like 6 of their sake & cucumber handroll. definitely somewhere i’d revisit over and over again for happy hour!

“I came for happy hour and the handrolls are reasonably priced and good quality.”
I came for happy hour and the handrolls are reasonably priced and good quality. I liked the uni cheesecake. I tried the toki highball- not for me, but I’m not a typical alcohol drinker. Staff was attentive and checked on me a lot.

“I’m already excited to go back.”
I’m already excited to go back. The speed that the handrolls were presented, the freshness of the seafood, and the mindful preparation were all soooooo good and left little to be desired. A little show stopper ending would be the strawberry sandwich dessert. Everything about it was so legit. Also the happy hour prices were perfect and will get me back in the door again and again and again.

Amazing! Great vibe and delicious hand rolls and drinks. I don't think I will have better handrolls until I actually visit Japan. Very cozy atmosphere, perfect for a cozy date. Service was wonderful. We will be back!

“This is the BEST omakase in Chicago.”
This is the BEST omakase in Chicago! Tried this $175/person omakase at Fulton Market and was blown away! The vibe is more like an American-Japanese bar—lively and dimly lit—but the food was phenomenal. The chef prepares everything on the spot, no fixed menu, and every dish was a creative surprise with incredible flavors. Definitely worth it! I wax so sad that the dishes end. Every dish is so creative and surprisingly good. Tried 9/4/2024 sorry for the late review.

“I finally found a fav handroll spot that I’m going to keep coming back to.”
I finally found a fav handroll spot that I’m going to keep coming back to! This place is very good. What we tried, ranked in order of what we loved: truffle hamachi, zuke salmon, negi toro, spicy tuna, and kani blue crab. They do a happy hour which is I believe from 4-7 on weekdays. The place is on smaller side, vibes r very cozy and relaxed. Service was great. It’s on pricier side so might be good for special occasion/date vs big group outing. We are picky with our sushi and loved all the flavors and freshness of this spot, so it’s def a keeper in our books.

“EDIT: I wanted to add onto my original review after coming back a second time for the omakase chef’s menu.”
EDIT: I wanted to add onto my original review after coming back a second time for the omakase chef’s menu. I believe this experience at Yokocho was very unique and high-quality compared to other sushi spots in Chicago. I would highly recommend this for a date night or special occasion. Loved hearing the chef’s inspiration behind the menu and history of different preparation methods. Walked in on a Thursday night with a small group & was seated immediately. Our waiter was friendly and made good recommendations. Has a cool vibe once inside, but was a little hard to find from the street. Everything we had was fresh and tasty, however the menu is limited and some portions are on the small side for the price. Good happy hour during the week, but nothing to write home about in terms of exceptional quality, unique menu items, or value for the dinner menu.
