Gari Sushi Chicago — under-the-radar japanese in Bucktown. Presentation matters here, and every dish shows care. Owner on site, BYOB.

“But what does set Gari's aside, was the noodles, which were beyond excellent - spicy, full of flavor and great meatballs in her dish”
Sadly, mediocre rolls with soggy rice and salmon that was a little too old.
I went here with a groupon. The price was super high considering the sushi.

“My bf and I stopped in on New Year’s Day.”
My bf and I stopped in on New Year’s Day. The sushi was so so good. We ordered a few maki rolls and the Paricutin roll which we both really enjoyed. You can tell the sushi and fish is really fresh and high quality. The service was really fast and the chef was so accommodating and friendly. Definitely coming back.

The sushi and presentation were fantastic. The fish quality was great, and everything was very tasty :) On top of that the owner was very kind. Very glad we stopped by and plan to come back next time we're in the area.

“Ended up here by chance and glad we did.”
Ended up here by chance and glad we did! We were warmly greeted by the owner and chef who customized some of the best sushi rolls! 10/10 recommend! Might not look like much but the rolls are great!

AKA Sakura; same owner/chef (Roberto) for about 14 years! He's happy to adjust menu items to your requirements, and takes more than usual care with the presentation/decoration of the platters.

Kind of an unassuming place but the sushi is not to be messed with. It’s a one man show and he’s a star. Rolls are amazing and have a lot of variety, service is relatively quick given that this man is all on his own and the freshness and flavor of everything we’re great. BYOB as well. Highly recommend!

“Found my local neighborhood sushi spot.”
Found my local neighborhood sushi spot! I only tried it because it’s super close to me but wow I’m glad I did. I got the “Hoola Hoop” roll and not only did it look great but tasted amazing to! Usually take out sushi isn’t as good as when you have it in the restaurant but they proved me wrong presentation was on point and the picture I took doesn’t do it justice. Try this spot forsure!

I've been here three times and they never disappoint. My friend who's a picky eater and not a huge fan of sushi, loved the food. I started recommending this place to all my friends.

We’ve been visiting this small local restaurant since early in the pandemic (while it was still called Sakura) and have really enjoyed the miso and sushi rolls. My favorites are the Wow Roll and the Warlock roll. I also really enjoy the sliced beets they use as a garnish. We usually order takeout, but now they’re open for inside visitors and BYOB.
