“Hands down one of the best Japanese experiences in Chicago - the Omakase is a stunning meal with a variety of creative bites! The nigiri had amazing fish quality and thoughtful seasoning, and the scallop and oyster shooters and the flaming scallop were other standout courses. The pacing was a bit brisk, so something to keep in mind if you’re looking for a more leisurely meal, but the value is unbeatable for the quality and variety. For dessert, the lava cake with black sesame ice cream was a fantastic dessert. We also loved the intimate booth seating that feels extra cozy. Overall, an amazing meal with warm hospitality, and we will definitely return.”

“Completely exceeded my expectations. While most high-end omakase spots strictly focus on nigiri, this place masterfully bridges the gap by offering an incredible lineup of creative, mouth-watering specialty rolls alongside their traditional tasting courses.”

“10/10 stars! I chose to do the omakase dinner and it did not disappoint at all! I will absolutely be doing this again when I come back in to town. Servers are very attentive, my water did not go empty once! The food is curated in an upscale manner and it is absolutely delicious! As soon as you are done with one course they are serving you the next, timing is impeccable! I cannot say enough about this restaurant.”

“Wonderful restaurant, service, and food. We partook in the omakase for the evening. It was a beautiful 11 (I believe) course meal perfectly curated by the chef. The nigiri was fantastic as was the scallop, which was a unique experience for me as I typically am not a fan of scallops.”

“We came here for our wedding anniversary and they did not disappoint! The omakase was wonderful and intimate. From the salmon skin crisp (my husband will dream about this forever) to the flaming oyster, everything has its own charm. I love how attentive their staff was. They even overheard we were celebrating our anniversary so that so sweet of them to adorn the occasion. Wonderful experience, amazing food, I wish them nothing but the best!”

“Kai Zan is truly a standout dining experience, and much of that comes down to the incredible talent of Carlo and Melvin. Their approach to sushi is nothing short of innovative—blending traditional technique with modern creativity in a way that feels both exciting and deeply respectful of the craft. Each course felt thoughtfully curated, with unique flavor combinations and beautifully presented dishes that showed real artistry. You can tell that Carlo and Melvin operate at a Michelin-level standard—the attention to detail, precision, and quality of ingredients are all exceptional. Beyond the food, the experience itself is intimate and elevated. The chefs clearly take pride in what they do, and it shows in every bite. If you’re looking for a sushi experience that goes beyond the ordinary, Kai Zan is absolutely worth it.”

“The scallop here is incredible. What a great experience and journey of incredible sushi. everything is very fresh and delicious. This place never disappoints and is very worth trying out and eating great sushi. Make sure to make a reservation in advance”

“The best sushi I’ve ever had in my life. Can’t wait to go back again.”

“KAI ZAN was excellent. The omakase menu had a great variety, and everything tasted incredibly fresh. Each course felt intentional and well put together without being over the top. Definitely worth it if you enjoy omakase.”

“Always a great time here. They have one of the best omakase I've experienced in Chicago. The staff is always super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. If you love sushi, Kai Zan is a must try.”

“Hands down the best omekase we've had in the city. Service was more attentive and the pace of the courses was better when we sat at the sushi bar last time. This time, it felt a bit rushed where courses were coming out before we'd finished the last. But honestly, it needed to because with 11 delicious courses in a reservation slot, you have to stay motivated. We've spent the last 3 special occasions dining here and will definitely return. The restaurant is an hour drive from us in traffic but so worth it. You'll often find parking on the street out front, as well.”
