Sepia
Sepia — one of West Loop's strongest american spots. Good cocktails round out an already strong menu. Friendly team that sets the tone. "The oysters were some of the best we’ve ever had and were very interesting" — Simon Martin Trudeau [$$$]

“One of the nicest meals I’ve ever had, went with the wine pairing of course. Came for an anniversary dinner and had a fabulous time.”

“Service was the clearest differentiator. In a city where exceptional food is widely available, Sepia stood out through the quality of the guest experience. Our server was personable, thoughtful, and highly effective at creating dialogue rather than simply reciting descriptions, particularly when walking us through both the wine and non-alcoholic pairings. The bartender was similarly impressive: polished, confident, and knowledgeable while still feeling approachable. More broadly, the staff appeared genuinely engaged and happy to be there, which materially improved the tone of the evening. The food itself was very good, with strong technical execution throughout the 8-course tasting menu. While not every dish aligned with our personal preferences, the overall standard was consistently high. The kitchen demonstrated strong command of flavor, texture, and progression, with each course contributing to a broader narrative across the meal. The result was a thoughtful and well-constructed dining experience rather than a collection of disconnected plates. The beverage experience was more mixed. The wine pairings were acceptable but uneven in value and distinctiveness. Some selections felt relatively unremarkable, particularly given that certain bottles appeared to retail in the roughly $30 to $50 range (Vivino Scores ~3.9). That said, a few were more distinctive and elevated. The wine pairing came across as if they were selected for broader (cheaper) acceptability, rather than genuine quality or character. In contrast, the non-alcoholic pairings were excellent and, in our view, outperformed the wine pairing significantly. They were creative, well-matched, and consistently memorable. For diners who enjoy wine, ordering from the bottle list may be the stronger option. The meal was paced well overall. I tracked the intervals between courses from the time plates were cleared to the arrival of the next dish. The shortest gap was 5 minutes 55 seconds, and the longest was 24 minutes 43 seconds, which occurred later in the meal. Average pacing was approximately 11 minutes between courses. In context, this compares favorably with many one-star experiences that can feel less controlled. The timing supported both conversation and digestion without making the evening feel rushed. From a pricing standpoint, the experience felt fair, though not unequivocally compelling on value. I am guessing that the 4-course offering may be of higher "value" but the largest takeaway here is that this restaurant performs at a bib-gourmand level with the pricing of a Chicago 1-star. Our total was approximately $775 including tip for two 8-course meals, two mixed drinks, a bottle of sparkling water, one wine pairing, and one non-alcoholic pairing. That did not feel egregious for the category, but the value equation weakens somewhat if the paired wines are not consistently high quality. Overall, Sepia is a very good choice for a date night and worth revisiting, especially for the service and overall execution. Next time, we would probably do the 4-course menu.”

“Knowledgeable bartender who gave wonderful recommendations. Cocktails were creative and visually pleasing!”

“2026 visit. Amazing restaurant with no exception. 2023 visit. No doubt one of the best.”

“Every single bite was unforgettable, innovative, delicious. The service was top notch & the drinks were amazing. They made my birthday very special & I left stuffed after the 8 course tasting menu! I’ll be back on the next special occasion.”

“I cannot say enough. We came here to check out the food planning to be married here next year. For me it was a home run. We chose to do the eight course chef choice. Give yourself time for this. We were eating and drinking and enjoying life for well over 2 hours with it. They really walk you through each course. And it danced around every flavor and was simply amazing. Now…you’re gonna pay for it. Prepare yourself. One of the best meals I’ve ever had. And I eat a lot.”

“Had an amazing time for my wife's birthday. Every bite was delicious. The short rib in particular was our favorite dish of the night. Amazing tasting menu. The drinks were also really interesting and fun. The Wrong Turn at Albuquerque is carrot cake in a glass. We will definitely be returning.”

“We had a wonderful experience dining with Sepia. The first bite, the lady edison country ham donut, set the tone and wowed us right off the bat. The balance of flavors in all dishes presented was impeccable, they are well deserving of their star. The overall tone is very comfortable yet upscale, just like Chicago. You will feel at home here, no matter your vibe. Don’t miss the wine pairing, the cocktails are delicious but the wine truly enhances the dining experience. I am by no means an experienced wine connoisseur and I found the wine pairing outstanding. Our server, Jordan I believe (curly hair and glasses), was incredible. We were really impressed with his service. Serving food in a setting like this isn’t easy and he is a shining star. I was happy to see they offer their employees benefits as part of the bill, as someone with a chef in my family 🩷.”

“We had an incredible time celebrating my boyfriend's birthday at Sepia! The staff were all fantastic, and our waitress Christina was so knowledgeable and friendly. We did the tasting menu with the wine pairing and everything was delicious! We were very impressed with the menu and appreciated the chef making accommodations for my pescatarian diet. We can't wait to go back again in the future!”

“Great michelin star experience. Price was reasonable, service was kind, and environment was cozy with decent amount of energy. Two of us each had a four course menu. 1) Hiramasa Crudo & Smoked Beef Carpaccio, 2) Lightly Smoked Ocean Trout & Gai Yang Chicken Wing Zampone, 3) Grilled Beef Short Rib & Rohan Duck Breast, and 4) Caramelized Apple Mille-Feuille & Sourdough Crepe Cake. All were flavorful and would recommend. I’ve only had a couple of fine dining experiences in Chicago but this place was my favorite so far. Felt like staff was also extra attentive since it was for a special occasion.”

“I dined solo on a Thursday evening, and the dining room wasn’t very busy, which meant the staff had plenty of time and attention—and the service was excellent throughout. Water was always topped off, and each course was thoughtfully presented and explained without ever feeling overbearing. The food itself was outstanding. For the price point, the tasting menu felt like an exceptional value. There were around eight courses, and the vast majority were dishes I absolutely loved. The starters in particular were the highlight of the meal and really set the tone for the evening. Desserts were also very strong. The atmosphere struck a great balance—clearly elevated, but still comfortable and approachable. Sepia delivers a refined, well-executed dining experience that feels thoughtful, generous, and well worth seeking out.”
