Good food. A very welcoming, responsive staff. Great for single dining and small groups.
I love Mariano's supermarket at the South Loop, is always well stock with everything I need for my groceries needs, their selection of wines is impressive, they also have ready made food from sushi to salads, desserts and all sorts of breads, and everything in between, their staff is friendly, courteous and easy to talk to, shout out to Kevin who's constantly helping customers with their shopping carts, always with a smile on his face.
Carlos in the Deli is absolutely amazing.
employees are super nice.

“I love their jalapeño cornbread at the bakery”
“Such a good supermarket with loads of options, including freshly made guacamole and smoothies.”
Such a good supermarket with loads of options, including freshly made guacamole and smoothies. Large salad and pasta bar too. I love their jalapeño cornbread at the bakery. We came from the UK and bought lots of gifts from here. You can also get their card on the app for discounts. Only disappointment was the lady at the self checkouts was very unhelpful. We could see that there were loads of plastic bags but she kept telling us that there were none left. Seemed very reluctant to even speak with us. Other staff were friendly though.

“Mariano's is a great local Chicago grocery chain and part of Kroger.”
Mariano's is a great local Chicago grocery chain and part of Kroger. Wide selection of grocery products and an excellent to go hot/cold food section. They have an adequate selection of kombucha as well even carrying a made in Chicago brand named Kombuchade. Kombuchade Wild Guava was great.

“I am visiting from Canada.”
I am visiting from Canada. This is a first class grocery store with absolutely everything that you need. The lady at the flower shop was so friendly and helpful. The sheer selection of high quality products in every department is impressive. I highly recommend this to locals and toursits. Thanks team for a terrific experience.

“This is a nice location.”
This is a nice location. They just have some really unhappy people working in the deli and bakery. I was able to get my questions answered by a polite associate who happened to be walking by but I forgot dudes name. If you need some flowers, see “Z” in the floral department she’s fantastic.

“They really aim to make the shopping experience great here.”
They really aim to make the shopping experience great here. Good selections, friendly staff, and a high end feeling in comparison to other grocery stores. Prices aren't the cheapest, but some great deals can be had here such as the 2.50 beer during happy hour and the 10 dollar whole pizza plus a 2 liter on Thursdays. Food court area even has a microwave if you want to warm up food to eat!

“Pretty average grocery store on a seeming quest for mediocrity.”
Pretty average grocery store on a seeming quest for mediocrity. Started well 12 or so years ago, but has been on a downward trajectory since. Diminished brand variety and heavy emphasis on house brands, much more limited selection in dairy, seafood & meat counters and cases, and less variety in frozen cases. Latest is their seeming inability to keep carts available - not unusual to find zero carts both by the entrance and by the exit (see photos), necessitating a wait or even a hunt for an available cart. Grocery is a famously difficult business, but this store is smack in the middle of one of the wealthiest areas of the entire region, and management seems to be applying the playbook for the average income area, which of course encourages folks looking for unusual and special to look elsewhere. A lost opportunity, which is why my visit frequency has dropped from a few times weekly to a handful of visits PER YEAR.

“In terms of convenience this is a great grocery store for me, walking distance between my home and work.”
In terms of convenience this is a great grocery store for me, walking distance between my home and work. In terms of price and freshness I prefer taking a short drive to cermak produce or Tony's. The vero coffee and gelato place is really cool in the first floor, I love the vivace breakfast sandwich, it's a solid way to start the day.

“This place is a mess.”
This place is a mess. Two stars only because of the convenient location, good hours of operation, and lower prices than the Whole Foods next door. I've reluctantly been going here for over a year (can't stomach the prices at WF), and have had lots of frustrating experiences. The produce section is by far the worst aspect of this store. They're regularly out of standard items (spinach, berries, spring mix), and when they do have what you want, it's often of poor quality: fuzzy strawberries, bright-green unripened avocados, and wilted lettuce. Whenever I ask an employee, they always seem to be "waiting on a shipment". Not sure how they haven't figured out how to stock their produce section after having been in the neighborhood for years. The aisles are tight, which is to be expected of a city grocery store, but they inexplicably always have unattended cards with boxes and products just lying around. This is especially problematic when occurring in the produce section, which is both at the entrance of the store and is extra-snug to begin with. I see these unattended carts every single time I visit - last time I counted 7 just in produce. Additionally, their cart return system is easily-overwhelmed and they don't seem to have enough carts to handle peak shopping times, so it can sometimes be tough to get one while there are numerous holding trash or product out in the store. The check-out lanes are super close to the shopping area and they never seem to have enough open during busy periods, which causes lots of congestion and awkward lines through product aisles. The first several aisles seem to be permanently closed (and often full of trash/boxes), which may have a good reason but looks bad and is frustrating when you're waiting in a long line. Customer service is also hit-or-miss. While some employees are genuinely nice, many look bored or pissed that you're there. I've seen employees take their frustration out by snapping or yelling at customers who aren't moving fast enough for their liking. Most employees are teenagers (which is to be expected of a grocery store), but many VISIBLY couldn't care less about their jobs, which is awkward as a customer. I also once saw 2 employees openly mocking a customer as she walked away. It's the closest grocery store to my apartment, so I begrudgingly go there and it's certainly better than getting groceries at 7-11 or something. I'm just baffled by all of the blatant issues, especially during peak shopping hours: uninformed or uninterested staff, cluttered aisles, poor organization, and abandoned carts and trash throughout the store. If I were a manager or worked in operations at this store, I'd be embarrassed.

Dec 2025: we had a wild 7 months of excellent escalator work but it’s down again but hey they take Apple Pay now! May 2025: escalator has been repaired… for now April 2025: escalator remains broken March 2025: escalator still broken Feb 2025 update: the escalator in the store has been broken for weeks. // It’s sad really because this could be (and probably once was) a nice store. I shop here due to convenience but the selection is often limited or unavailable, products are often on the wrong shelf, and there are NEVER available carts. You want a cart? Hunt one down. Don’t want to do this? Hold what you can carry. Oh they also do not take Apple Pay. Meanwhile, down the road, Whole Foods has no trouble stocking their food, supplying carts and baskets and accepting Apple Pay. I hope Mariano’s Corporate reads this, comes to this store. and gives the manager and staff a talking to. It is embarrassing.

“I’ve just decided I’m going to post the out of date and rotten items I find on every single trip to...”
I’ve just decided I’m going to post the out of date and rotten items I find on every single trip to this poor excuse of a store. It’s 10/31/22. This mayo expired 9/26/21… which was 13 months ago. That tells you every single thing you need to know about this store. Sadly I forgot to take a pic of the rotisserie chicken that was 6 days past its sell by. They were nice enough to put it on sale though which seems fair for the salmonella. The skirt steak which was 2 days out and a lovely shade of gray. The cottage cheese last week that was 2 weeks out of date. That review is below. Spend the extra money and go to Whole Foods across the street. The extra money you spend on food will still be cheaper than the hospital bill you’ll eventually get shopping from here.

“This place seriously needs to do better when it comes the the seafood.”
This place seriously needs to do better when it comes the the seafood. Came in yesterday to get crab legs and could clearly tell the food had gone bad (yellow and raised looking) made the guy behind the counter aware of my concern and left. Came back today and those same spoiled looking crab legs were still on display. I’m writing a review now because this is my second time seeing this. I purchased crab legs some months ago and when I got home and open the sealed bag, I instantly knew they were spoiled from the smell. This is a major health concern and needs to be addressed and fixed.
