“The lighting in the restaurant was excellent; it was dim, but lit enough to see. The noise level was reasonable as well. The atmosphere was welcoming. The food was incredible!”

“I ate all the other things before I could take photos! The handrolls here are amazing. One of my favorite Nigiri bites is the Hotate. Shishito peppers are so good. Pair with your favorite Suntory whiskey. How could you go wrong?!”

“I love this restaurant so much. It has quickly become a Chicago favorite because of the incredible menu, very fresh high quality fish, wonderful people who run the place, and excellent vibes. They have an awesome happy hour too! Can not recommend this spot enough truly a gem!! Favorites are the bluefin maki and the salmon avo roll with white miso sauce and crispy capers!”

“Best place ever!!! Came here for my birthday and loved the place. Service was excellent and food was the best. You have to come here!!!”

“WOW!! Love the SPECIAL ROLLS and the FISH and CHIPS! Highly recommended!”

“2025 Edit: I went here again last year and was not as impressed anymore. I no longer think it’s the best sushi in Chicago, it’s pretty good but the last times I went it didn’t taste as good as it used to. Tasted less fresh. (Old Review)This is by far the best sushi in Chicago hands down. My boyfriend and I stumbled across this place by chance and fell in love with it. Then we couldn’t figure out where we had gone for a while and found it again and their menu had changed slightly but it was still the delicious sushi place we had been to before. The fish there is just so fresh tasting. The combinations of flavors they put in their rolls are amazing. I absolutely love this place and we go back there at least once every time my boyfriend is in town. HIGHLY recommend.”

“Tanoshii Sushi in West Loop is easily one of my favorite sushi spots in Chicago! If you’re craving high-quality, fresh, and creative sushi, this is the place to be. The Chef’s Special is what makes Tanoshii extra special—you never know exactly what you’re getting, but it’s always amazing. You just tell the chef what you like (and don’t like), and they work their magic. Every time, it’s something fresh, flavorful, and beautifully put together. We also tried the Greentea Apple Mocktail, but honestly, I wasn’t a fan—the flavors just didn’t mix the way I hoped. That said, their happy hour is solid, so there are plenty of other drinks and bites to enjoy at a great price. Pro tip: Make a reservation! This place fills up fast, especially during peak hours, so don’t risk the wait. The service is always great, and the cozy, welcoming vibe makes it perfect for a fun night out.”

“Went for Restaurant Week and added the Maki Special - loved it! Great vibe, delicious food, and friendly staff 🍣”

“We had such a great experience here, I can’t say enough good things about it. The service was spectacular from start to finish, and our server Dave was attentive, knowledgeable, and thoughtful. Like, it has been a minute since I’ve truly been impressed by service. And the food…omg it was all so good. The udon noodle soup has the tastiest broth I’ve ever had and the special sushi rolls have so much flavor. The atmosphere for 9pm on a Friday night was cozy, chill, and intimate. My fiancé, who can be particular about sushi, was like, we NEED to come back here asap. And I’m 100% sure we will.”

“Sushi was excellent, the hamachi roll and believe it or not the field green salad were really good. Staff there were super friendly and attentive.”

“If you’re looking for excellent quality, flavor, thoughtful dishes - all at an appropriate price, Tanoshii is the place to be. We were able to sneak in a reservation on Friday night and had a nice time. We stared with shishito peppers and bluefin truffle shashimi (we were so hungry that we forgot to take pics!) - both appetizers were simply excellent. We also ordered two of the special rolls, which are “chef’s choice” (shown here). Friendly service to boot - stop by and celebrate a West Loop Classic!”

“I've had my eye on this place for years. My boyfriend and I moved across the street from it over a year ago, and we just recently tried it last month. This place is overlooked, probably by many, just like it was by me. I always thought it was some mediocre sushi place where you'll find your typical Americanized rolls. I was SO WRONG. I've lived in the city for about 8 years now, and I am not lying when I tell you that this restaurant is top 3 on my list for sushi spots. The fish here is actually really high quality and tastes absolutely delicious (it's imported from Spain so makes sense). It tastes so fresh, which is hard to come by in the city. If the food wasn't enough for how amazing this place is, the staff and service is top tier. The quality of food and the service there will have you thinking you're getting Michelin star quality. Talk to your server about the things you like/dislike and they will point you in the right direction of what to get, and will even make accomodations with their special rolls based on what you like.”
