Sankyu Sushi & Izakaya - Bar Lounge — well-regarded japanese in Mt Prospect. The walls could tell stories. The drinks match the food in quality.

We had a confusing and disappointing experience.
I am an old time customer of the old Sankyu which had a very unique izakaya menu that appealed to many local Japanese.
I’m quite certain this place didn’t advertise honestly.

“Most of the menu portions were small but perfect for sharing across a large party: ginkgo nuts, first time trying them in Chicago; gyoza, just the right amount of thin, crispy outer layer and very juicy fillings; chicken liver, very savory and a bit zesty (one couldn't tell if it's a dessert or appetizer); tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled egg), freshly made with perfectly even texture”
“Been coming here on and off for the past 10 years.”
Been coming here on and off for the past 10 years. Always love their tapas, they're authentic tea room and kind service. They recently just remodeled and its really nice and bright, though I didn't mind the slightly darker ambiance before that set the mood! They have late night karaoke which we have yet to try but heard it was fun 😁 growing up in Japan Yakitori and Yakisoba were my all time favorite dishes as a kid, I can always count on Sanyku to bring back those memories every time!

“Great experience at Sankyu.”
Great experience at Sankyu. The Kurobuto Chashu bowl was delicious, and the yakitori was really good too. You can tell the food is very authentic Japanese, especially compared to chain restaurants. Will definitely be back.

“Lovely tradiotional Japanese restaurant.”
Lovely tradiotional Japanese restaurant. The food was delicious & really loved the tea. Usually I am not a fan, but this one was so good. Highly recomment this spot, many veggie options for my friend and many meat options for me. We loved it. Can't wait to come back, I really wanna sit traditionally on the floor. So awesome.

“Outstanding Tonkatsu Bento.”
Outstanding Tonkatsu Bento! The pork cutlet was perfectly fried — crispy without being greasy and incredibly tender inside. Sankyu Sushi & Izakaya delivers authentic Japanese flavors, and this dish really stands out. Great quality, great portions, and amazing taste.

“Can I give 6 stars? 1.”
Can I give 6 stars? 1. Asked questions of Shoju, the owner brings beautiful bottle to show you and give a taste! This is better service than last night at 5 star Park Hyatt restaurant! 2. The Izakaya grill chicken skin & spicy pepper, 5 star presentation and taste. 5/5 3. The chilled tofu, 6 star presentation on an iced bucket, and for a steal price. 6/5 4. The simmer fish bone, good amount of fish collar, again nice presentation. 4/5 5. Fatty Salmon Nigiri, 5/5 So what’s the secret of make JP restaurant level sashimi VS the supermarket sashimi? Different level fish, or different knife cutting technique? 6. JP music at background and nice sushi bar seat, deco is 5/5. I’ll be back for more. A new Gem in Chicago suburb. Must try, please. I’m concerned, they don’t have enough customer to sustain their current food quality / service / price level. People, this newly renovated new owner restaurant is a must try.

“Hands down the best place to get Japanese food in the suburbs.”
Hands down the best place to get Japanese food in the suburbs! Very authentic with a wide menu. The sushi is top notch and it’s THE place to get yakitori in the Chicagoland area. I got the beef bowl tonight and I loved it so much I forgot to even take a picture of it before I devoured it. They also have a good selection of Japanese beers, whiskeys, and even highballs and shochu cocktails! The staff is very nice and attentive and the ambience is off the charts with lovely Japanese city pop and all the accoutrements you’d expect from an authentic Japanese izekaya. Make sure to check the daily specials before you order and DON’T SKIP DESSERT!

“Last time we were here was 10 years ago.”
Last time we were here was 10 years ago. Now with new ownership, we had to try it again. It’s as close to an izakaya from japan. The newly renovated dining area is nice. Food was good, i had the mackerel combo and wifey had the tempura combo. Both were delicious! We miss the gyutan(beef tongue), i hope they bring it back 🤞. Since it’s just a walking distance from our place, we will be a regular here for sure. Mata ikimasu!
