Udupi Palace Restaurant | Best vegetarian Indian Restaurant in Chicago

3.41,499 reviews ·Opens at 11AM

Udupi Palace is a Devon Avenue favorite for South Indian vegetarian classics, especially its dramatic paper masala dosa—thin, crisp, and rolled around spiced potatoes—with silky sambar, coconut chutney, fluffy idly, thali platters, and fresh mango lassi. Regulars also rave about filter coffee and welcoming service, making it great for casual lunches or introducing newcomers to Indian food, though reviews are mixed on consistency, flavor, and service speed.

Idk what to even say, the best thing here is south Indian but that also was mediocre. Rest, like veg lolipop is not even similar to flavourful or Indian cuisine.

Food is ok. It was pretty bland. We ordered vegetable biryani, Mysore masala dosa and Kadai paneer. It’s comparable to what we make at home. Nothing extraordinary to crave for. Ambiance is ok. Staff are pretty attentive though

Very tasty and authentic Indian food. Spices and aromas are correct. Not too much oil. Lassi tastes very fresh with good mango. Chutney is well made. Some of the party got thali (showcases all dishes), very well done and shows all the food here is good.

We love this restaurant and have had several lunches and some dinners over here in the last few years. The people are very nice and courteous. I like the food very much especially all the dosas. They also have filter coffee which I am a fan of. I don't understand why people rated it poorly. Certainly much better than what people are saying. I am an Indian and have had some really good food at great restaurants in India which people for whatever reason, rated poorly. I have become resistant to such ratings that does not depict the reality. Try it for yourself and decide. It's not very expensive either and you will be surprised.

I've been craving this place since I moved away more than 10 years ago, and I'm happy to report that it's as good as I remembered. The dosai are crisp and fresh, the sambar has just the right spice level, and the iddly are somehow both dense and fluffy with a nice slightly sour tang. I wish I had time to eat here more than once while I'm in town.

I love having a south Indian vegetarian restaurant so close by. Their food is incredible. I especially love their paper masala dosa, which comes with spicy and silky sambar, and cool coconut chutney. Having a 3' long lentil and rice crepe, perfectly thin and crispy and rolled into a tube stuffed with porato potato, onion and spices arrive at the table is a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. If you like fragrant, spicy vegetarian food, this is the place of your dreams. And don't miss the paper mandala dosa!
