Uncle Mike's Place — high-caliber filipino in West Town. Feels like it's been there since before the neighborhood changed. There's imagination in the cooking here, and affordable.

“You get a good portion size and everything else as delicious, the bangus was crispy and the spam had a slight sweet yet savory taste”
I was excited about this place based on reviews from friends. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. 1- No AC.

Arrived at 11:15 on a Saturday, about 15 min wait. Absolutely incredible food. I went with the Tocino / Baby Bangus. Great service too, they make sure you always have coffee.

Filipino SILOG dishes are available, I ordered the Bangsilog (BANGus, SInangag, ItLOG) and it came with Champorado. The LUGAW was a surprise! They gave each of us a lugaw bowl while waiting for the food. They also have American breakfast options. Such a great place to take non-filipino friends. Food is delicious. Staff is great.

As soon as we sat down, we were welcomed with a complimentary bowl of arroz caldo—such a nice touch and so comforting. We ordered garlic rice with eggs and longanisa, along with a baby milkfish, and everything tasted perfect. The flavors were authentic and cooked just right. The meal even came with champorado, which was the perfect sweet finish. What a great experience from start to finish!

Love this place! It's truly a Chicago gem. It came recommended via a friend. We had the day off and decided to venture out on our bikes and check it out. The owner Lucy came out and warmly greeted us, and gave some excellent recommendations. We had a combo of Tecino and Longaniza, and the fish. Both were amazing (super comfort food). Fortunately, Uncle Mike himself came out for a chat and we spent a lovely afternoon conversing with both him and his wife. Highly recommend this place for comfort food. Will be back soon!

“Fantastic Filipino breakfast.”
Fantastic Filipino breakfast! Had the tocino and the skirt steak, all cooked great and full of flavor. The skirt steak is more Western and doesn't have a particular Filipino flair but still delicious. The porridge and the dessert rice pudding that comes together with the breakfast completes things, they tasted great and didn't come off as things thrown in just to bulk it out. On weekends, there is a high chance of lines so plan accordingly! Theres a QR code online waiting system so you don't have to physically wait in line which is nice.

“The food was great.”
The food was great. There’s no official BYOB policy, but they let us bring our own beers for brunch, which was awesome. The wait was a bit long (~1 hour at 11am on Sunday for 5 people) and service was a bit slow since they were packed, but everyone was kind so we didn’t mind. Highly recommend. Already want to go back.

“Uncle Mike’s in Chicago is not just another breakfast diner.”
Uncle Mike’s in Chicago is not just another breakfast diner. It’s a portal. I walked in one morning, threw on some Tagalog hard rap in my headphones, and suddenly my stomach and my soul were on the same flight to Manila—with a too-short layover in Chicago. The food? Incredibly unique (at least to most white bread Americans like me), which honestly feels like a shame since the Philippines is one of the most populous countries on Earth and its food is still underappreciated here. The dishes are filling in that comfort-food way, but they also have this soul-food magic that can flip your whole mood around. I'll be honest, I didn't eat it all. Some of these tastes were hitting me for the first time and it was just a little bit too hard to wrap my mouth around. But I enjoyed everything, and found it both unique and sensational. Every plate felt like it has a backstory, maybe even a personality. The flavors punch, hug, and sneak up on you all at once. It’s the kind of place where you go once and immediately start plotting your return. Because yeah, you’ll want another plate—but also because it’s not just food. It’s a whole experience. And sometimes, experience is the thing that makes us feel alive.
