Evergreen Restaurant — a chinese spot in Chinatown. Sleek and intentional, with the aesthetic dialed in. The cooking is rooted in real tradition. Mona: "The beef was tender and the flavors were rich" [$$]

Delicious food and great service! I love the decor, it’s an authentic classic Chinatown restaurant and I hope it never changes. The vintage feel to is really cool and sets it apart from all of the new places that keep popping up. This is one of my go-to restaurants. The staff is so kind too!

My family and friends loved the restaurant. It has a nostalgic atmosphere with good food. The portions are plentiful. The staff is wonderful and they are really attentive. Loved the lobster. Will definitely come back. They have a bar and make virgin drinks for kids. You will find something you enjoy on their menu. Bes spot un Chinatown! Thank you, Wendy!!

Evergreen is one of the older restaurants in the Old Chinatown area serving a diverse, expansive menu of primarily Cantonese staples. While I really liked some dishes (namely, the Fried Egg Tofu and Fried Taro Basket), other dishes were just so-so. The interior is arranged in classic, spacious Chinese banquet style, and the service is quick and direct. Food I tried: - Wonton Soup: Refreshing and aromatic, but there are better wonton soup options out there in Chinatown. - Fried Egg Tofu with Pea Pod Tips: Really good and would recommend!! Pea pod tips were well-sautéed; the egg tofu was full of flavor and had a great crispy exterior texture combined with a soft, silky interior texture. - Szechuan Eggplant: As a lover of Chinese-style sautéed eggplants, I was disappointed by this dish. The mix of eggplants with American broccoli didn’t work for me, and the eggplant wasn’t soft / fried enough. - Deep Sea in Basket: This is a creative dish that I haven’t seen before in other restaurants in Chinatown— it’s sautéed seafood placed in a “basket” made of taro. The basket was the best part in my opinion— it was both soft and crunchy, and had a nice subtle taro flavor, like eating taro chips. - Mongolian Delight: This was a standard, but very solid and flavorful dish of sautéed veggies and beef. The beef was tender and the flavors were rich. - Thai Pineapple Shrimp: Didn’t love this dish; it was originally supposed to be mango shrimp, but they ran out of mango and substituted pineapple. I didn’t love the monotonous flavor combination of the sour/tangy pineapple with the mildly sour/tangy sauce. Split between 4 people, the total came out to ~$30/pp including tax/tip, which was solid considering we were all extremely full afterwards and still had leftovers to take home.

The food was tasty but salty. Both dishes we got were tasty but there was not enough meat or shrimp bc the prices range from $18-$19 so you expect a certain amount of food. The decor could use some modernization from the 80-90s feel. Street parking only and either you pay on the app or find free street parking which is nearby but you need to be lucky. The wait staff were nice and accommodating.

We really wanted to give this place a higher rating but it is outdated and needs an upgrade in multiple ways. I could tell this restaurant was a premier restaurant back in the day many years ago. But to start with the atmosphere, there are no windows and the only sunlight that shines through is from the front door that you enter. Secondly, the Mongolian beef which is recommended by our waitress is supposedly to be one of their best dishes on the menu and this was just mediocre because it was cooked with food starch powder and the meat wasn’t marinated long enough. Their steamed pork buns.小籠包 was poor. The outside buns were thick and the pork stuffings were large and not tasty. The egg plant dish was ok. It was mentioned to us that they made the eggplant dish specifically for Chinese folks who would like how it is made. But I can tell you it was just mediocre. We even found a hair in the dish. I knew they tried. But they need a serious upgrade in all areas.

I'm a Malaysian visiting Chicago, and I ate here for my final meal before flying out. Chicken noodle soup and their Moy's Special are both insanely good - tastes of home. Staff are really friendly too.

Incredible food and wonderful customer service! Our lovely server recommended the egg tofu with pea tips and beef short ribs with black pepper sauce. And she was right! Both dishes were authentic and satisfying. The tofu was so flavorful and the beef was tender. The owner shared with us that this is the oldest Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. We will definitely be back to support!
