Gao's Kabob Chicago — neighborhood chinese in Chinatown. Always packed, always worth it. Technique and tradition show up on every plate. Open late, BYOB. "The lamb kebabs were perfectly balanced between lean and fat, juicy, and not gamey at all" — Cindy Jiang

“Tucked away on an obscure street in Chinatown, Gao's Kabob is a true hidden gem”
The food was delicious overall, but our experience with the seafood boil was extremely disappointing.
They DONT clean the shrimp. I told the waiter, and he said that is how they do it.
I think they have a misconception about barbecue.

“Seafood boil was excellent - lots of garlic flavor.”
Seafood boil was excellent - lots of garlic flavor! The shrimp was my favorite and tasted especially fresh. I also really enjoyed the lamb skewers, which were a steal at $1 each. The lychee green tea was a refreshing addition to our meal.

“This place was a pleasant surprise.”
This place was a pleasant surprise. I didn’t expect much at first, but the aroma hit as soon as the skewers came out. The lamb kebabs were perfectly balanced between lean and fat, juicy, and not gamey at all. The cumin and chili seasoning was spot on — flavorful and aromatic rather than just spicy.

“⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was my first time at Gao’s BBQ and it definitely won’t be my last.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was my first time at Gao’s BBQ and it definitely won’t be my last. The food was absolutely delicious, everything was full of flavor and cooked perfectly. The staff was very servicial, attentive, and made us feel welcomed from the moment we walked in. They were also super generous with portions, which made the experience even better. You can really tell they care about their customers. Highly recommend checking this place out if you’re looking for great food and amazing service!

“This was my first time here, and I didn’t expect much at first.”
This was my first time here, and I didn’t expect much at first. The environment feels like a Korean club with lots of LED lights, which I really liked. The BBQ was above and beyond. It wasn’t spicy for us, but luckily they offer spicy sauce on the side. We loved the service the most. They have a bell you can ring if you need anything, which is nice because you don’t feel disturbed, but help is always there. Definitely coming back!

“The atmosphere is really cool.”
The atmosphere is really cool. I got to this place on a rainy Thursday. The staff are friendly and the service was great. Food came out shortly after ordered. Every item is rich in flavor. The spices are just right, exactly the way I want. I like this place a lot more than other places because they allow customization while ordering and they make it right to my preference. They also offer to redo it if the customers don’t like. I liked it all. The tofu skin (20 pcs) is my favorite. I had the first set, and it’s so good that I had to order a second set. This was my first time, so I ordered different beef to see what’s the difference. Next time I would just order wagyu as it’s sooo goood. This is a great place to hang out with friends.

An absolute gem. The $1 lamb skewer deal cannot be beat. The squid, corn, mushroom, and garlic skewers are also delicious in addition to the hot noodle and eggplant dishes. I cannot recommend highly enough.

“This is a nice little place tucked on a side street in Chinatown.”
This is a nice little place tucked on a side street in Chinatown. The kabobs came out really fast and the cold soup was exactly as stated...cold, lol! The cabbage and chicken skin kabobs were the best. All of the ones we tried were good but those two stood out. The lamb and beef were little but tasty. Their onion rings came in a cute little basket. Also, a BYOB. Will certainly be back.

“Love the very laid back and chill ambiance.”
Love the very laid back and chill ambiance. Ordered a few skewers and small dishes with a friend for a late dinner. The skewers were better than any I have ever had. They were very flavorful and tender. You order the food for the table through an ordering platform by scanning a QR code and the easier confirmed the food with us after submitting an order. The ordering system was not the most user-friendly and we were not able to see the running total after the first round of ordering food as the platform said the order was complete. The people next to us were very confused as well as how to order. Overall good experience and would go again.

“Open late, this BBQ spot brings flavors of Asian night markets to Chicago.”
Open late, this BBQ spot brings flavors of Asian night markets to Chicago. BBQ meats (beef, lamb, pork) were layered, cooked well, complimented delectably by the seafood. We had Crawfish in medium spicy sauce. Staff were attentive and took great care of us.
