Hagen's Fish Market
A Portage Park institution for 80 years, Hagen’s Fish Market draws regulars for light-breaded jumbo shrimp, spicy popcorn shrimp, catfish po’boys, fried fish sandwiches, and standout garlic-peppered smoked salmon. Its old-school fish counter and rare wood-smoking tradition let you buy fresh seafood or bring in your own catch to smoke, with quick, friendly service; quality is top-notch, though some reviewers found portions small, dishes salty or greasy, and prices higher than elsewhere.

“There is a reason, Hagen fish market is celebrating their 80th anniversary. Stop in and see the fourth generation new owner If they don't have it, make a special request. You'll be impressed with some of the best seafood and best prices and freshest in the area. The best and freshest calamari I've had in a long time. Try the mini shrimp, cocktail or bring your own, and they'll make it your way. Could be the last real wood smoking fish house in the chicago area”
“Been coming to Hagens for the past 15 years. Absolutely love it. Fried fish sandwich, spicy popcorn shrimp and fried crab cake are amazing. Nice little section on fresh fish. Occasionally they carry certain fish depending on the season. My 4 year old and 2 year old daughter's love the shrimp. I have taken some of my fresh catch too and they smoked it perfectly”
“The garlic peppered smoked salmon was delicious. So was the fried jumbo shrimp. The breading was nice and light.”
“This place is the best and everything is always soo delicious and the service is always excellent thank you😊💛”
“Incredible fish sandwiches and poboys. And the fresh and smoked fish offerings are fantastic!”
“We usually get the fried shrimp and french fries. They are always excellent.”
“Catfish po boy was perfect, also got some smoked salmon which didn't make it home”
“We had fried shrimp and fish chips, it was excellent. Breading was good and tasty. We had the cocktail sauce that has horseradish in it, had a great tang to it. They have a few sauce options. Also grabbed a pound of smoked shrimp. Service was quick and friendly. Price is fair, $26/lb for the jumbo shrimp. Real good quality. You might find shrimps elsewhere for $2 - $4 less but Hagen's is top shelf. Fish chips were especially tasty, the pieces were a little small but we got our pounds worth and not a single bone. They have a decent selection of smoked fishes too, various seafood tools too. There's also a couple freezers with some exotics like frog legs (which were huge) and other shell fish.”
“Do you need to pull over and walk in here and get some shrimp? Yes you do. Don't put it off - do it today.”
