Osteria Via Stato — high-caliber italian in River North. Come for the food, stay for the energy. The drinks match the food in quality, and good value. Rachel H.: "The chicken was tender and perfectly cooked, and the broccolini added a nice fresh, crisp contrast"

Absolutely phenomenal service, food, and atmosphere! Extremely personable staff! Fast service and fantastic food! My wife and I and our 18month old were treated like royalty! 1000% recommend! Rigatoni was great!

Osteria Via Stato is the kind of Italian restaurant that does what good Italian restaurants are supposed to do and doesn't overthink it. The room on North State Street is warm and convivial, with exposed brick, dark wood, and the sort of comfortable noise level that makes you feel like everyone around you is also having a good meal. It's been a reliable River North address for years and the consistency is genuinely one of its strongest qualities. The Sunday Gravy is the dish that keeps people coming back most consistently, a slow-cooked tomato sauce made the way it was always supposed to be made, rich and deep and served with a choice of pasta that soaks it up properly. We went with rigatoni and it was the right call. The lasagna bolognese is another dependable anchor on the menu, layered properly with meat sauce and béchamel in a proportion that doesn't tip toward either extreme. The burrata with roasted cherry tomatoes and good olive oil is the starter worth beginning with, simple and well-sourced, the kind of dish where ingredient quality is the whole argument. The branzino with capers and lemon is the seafood option that gets mentioned most, light and cleanly cooked with a brown-butter finish that keeps it from being austere. Somewhere in the middle of all of that we also went through a basket of their house focaccia that arrived warm with olive oil for dipping, which is not a glamorous thing to mention but it was genuinely excellent and gone embarrassingly fast. Dessert was a classic tiramisu that didn't reinvent anything and didn't need to. Service here is professional and friendly without being stiff, and the restaurant moves at a pace that doesn't rush you toward the door. A solid, properly Italian evening without any surprises, and that's exactly what it aims to be.

I celebrated my birthday dinner here, and the experience was nothing short of amazing. Our waiter was incredibly attentive and took the time to thoughtfully explain the menu, offering great recommendations and making us feel well taken care of throughout the evening. I ordered the ragu, and it was cooked to perfection—rich, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. To top it all off, they surprised me with a cheesecake for my birthday, which was absolutely phenomenal. It was the perfect ending to a truly memorable night. I can’t recommend this place enough!

Always a favorite! Chef David cooking is so palatable and warms your heart with every meal. The service is always lovely. It feels like a true trattoria in Italy. Very comforting, very relaxed, but delicious.

We went for the feast of the seven fishes as a traditional Christmas Eve dinner in Italy. The food was excellent as was the service. The restaurant has Italian feel and conversation friendly.
