Izakaya Shinya — among the best japanese in Wicker Park. Buzzy, energetic room where the crowd adds to it. Not your typical menu, in a good way, and open late. [$$]

🌙Late night — the kitchen runs past 10.

Great Izakaya vibe. Food and decor are on point. They even had a tv playing Initial D playing one one of the TVs!

Nicole, Dianna, and Kylee showed us an absolute amazing Friday night of fun, karaoke, and drinks. We're so glad we stopped in. Tokyo experience in the neighborhood. Gonna come back for happy hour!

Cute and cozy atmosphere. Food was pretty good, the gyudon had a bit too much plain rice. Everything else tasted great!

Probably one of the best burgers in Chicago, especially from a place that you’d never think has a good burger. The fried rice was pretty good too, great presentation!

I am pleased with the savory foods. I got the wagyu and shrimp for the yakitori. I was a solo dinner, so I didn’t get the “yakitori” experience and instead, the already cooked items were provided to me (FYI). I love eel, so I was satisfied the the unagi don. Well done & tasty. Dessert was okay. I got the Taiyaki ice cream. The Taiyaki (fish shaped dough with red bean paste filling) was good. I think it was home made, so I liked it. The ‘matcha’ ice cream was meh. Expect vanilla ice cream flavor with match and food color green. I would come back for the savory food!

Good late night dinner and karaoke place! The place usually filled up around 10pm. So, try to get there a little bit earlier to grab a table. All the food is very tasty. Most of our orders are from the grill. They are served hot and not too saucy. We really enjoyed. The only reason that I gave 4 stars because of the cleanness. Right away when sat down, I sat on some food. 😵‍💫

I tried the hibachi rice with shrimp, karate and takiyaki. The karrage and takoyaki were really good but the hibachi rice with shrimp was lacking flavor. The service was okay, you order through a QR code and they bring your order to the table but they didn’t really check in much. Also took a while to get the bill after requesting it through the QR code. The pumpkin spice white russian was super good though I would go back just for that. I also like that it’s open late it’s a good late night option for sure.

The gyozas, karaage, fried rice and Kimo (chicken liver yakitori) were good. The okonomiyaki was very underwhelming. Hence, the 3 stars.

January 2026 Very mediocre place and flavorless dishes. It was a big disappointment to get a dry gyozas for appetizer. Main dishes had no flavor. Unfortunately, it is no go.
