The Alston — solid, no-fuss french in Gold Coast. The kind of room you save for someone special. The cocktail list is worth exploring. Sarah Kapadia: "The service was phenomenal, especially for our large group drinking that night"

“We had special restaurant week cocktails to start and migrated to restaurant week wine with the three courses of great food with excellent selection of artesian breads”
If influencers are getting a different menu during Restaurant Week, that needs to be acknowledged.
To start, we had a death in the family and wanted an immediate family dinner to celebrate the holidays.

“We went for Restaurant Week 2026.”
We went for Restaurant Week 2026. We enjoyed the food offerings, service, and atmosphere. We were visited my Scott Weiner, Principal and Co-Founder of The Alston, who was very welcoming. We had special restaurant week cocktails to start and migrated to restaurant week wine with the three courses of great food with excellent selection of artesian breads. We added a dessert that was great choice. Our waiter and Eleanor take wonderful care of us through the evening. We need to return and expand our selection of food.

“While we were in Chicago celebrating a closing for one of our clients, we decided to check out...”
While we were in Chicago celebrating a closing for one of our clients, we decided to check out Alston, located right in the heart of Chicagos Gold Coast. The valet was conveniently right in front, which made everything seamless from the moment we arrived. The space itself is elegant and upscale, with a welcoming atmosphere that you feel immediately when you walk in. We tried the caviar bump (highly recommend whether you love caviar or are trying it for the first time), the filet mignon, and a few other dishes that were beautifully prepared. The 100 year old Old Fashioned is an absolute must. A wonderful dining experience all around. We will definitely be back again.

“The Alston serves a steakhouse grade burger right.”
The Alston serves a steakhouse grade burger right! From the high quality beef patty, firm brioche bun, shoestring truffle fries to a very flavorful sweet onion, I truly believe they have knocked it off the charts. The waiters here are amazing--extremely attentive to filling your water glasses. You will certainly leave well hydrated. Beautiful steakhouse. Amazing service and trendy instrumental music.

“Incredible restaurant, incredible experience, incredible menu, everything incredible.”
Incredible restaurant, incredible experience, incredible menu, everything incredible. Their speciality is the duck press so we went mostly for that, was outstanding. They also have a huge wine list and very interesting bottles. You can see the wine cellar in the video. It goes in the best 10 restaurants in Chicago.

“My family and I braved a blizzard Saturday night because we had to try this new steakhouse we heard about on Instagram.”
My family and I braved a blizzard Saturday night because we had to try this new steakhouse we heard about on Instagram. We were blown away by how stunning this restaurant was decorated! My wife was absolutely obsessed with the wallpaper choices the owners made and can honestly say we'd be more than content having happy hour at the bar just to take in the décor alone. We started with what seemed to be every appetizer on the menu. The date night tower was incredible with King Crab that tasted unlike anything I've had before. Turns out they fly in Norwegian King Crab - Fresh. Every. Day. No idea who else is doing that in Chicago...The Seared Foie Gras was fire, but the Scallop Saint Jacques stood alone as the single best appetizer I have ever had at any steak house. The Alston House Salad is a can't miss (big Hearts of Palm fan!), and the Dressed Eggs should've been the end of my appetite but we soldiered onto the main courses. We ordered the Wagyu Boneless New York which was cooked to a perfect medium rare but the real star of the show was the Duck A La Presse. Not only was the duck to die for, the chef put on an incredible show fileting and pressing the duck right in front of us into the most savory of sauces. Our night ended with a tour de desert, ordering all three on the menu. I was most excited for the Apple Tarte Tatin which was nothing short of fantastic, but the Pistachio Entremet blew me away and might be a contender for top 5 desserts I have ever had. 10/5 stars for Alston - we will be back!

“My wife and I have eaten at all of the major steakhouses in downtown Chicago, and we were talking...”
My wife and I have eaten at all of the major steakhouses in downtown Chicago, and we were talking after our meal about why someone would choose to go to the Alston instead of another steakhouse. Here are a few reasons why the Alston is unique. 1. We ordered the porterhouse and it was perfectly cooked with a smoky char on the outside that was absolutely delicious with a perfect cook - medium rare. One of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Chicago has so many steakhouses that if you mess up the steak you can’t recover. This was excellent and the smoky char was addicting. 2. The dining room is the most beautiful of all the steakhouses we’ve been to. You feel special and the seating arrangements are comfortable and smartly laid out. 3. The welcome cocktail and bread service are wonderful and a nice way to greet a guest. Some places no longer serve bread or the bread is an afterthought. The Alston serves delicious, fresh bread presented beautifully. There were some misses though. 1. We ordered 3 starters and only one was good which was the foie gras tourchon. It was smooth, decadent and delicious. The king crab cake and steak tartare were both pasty and both had a gummy consistency and the crab/beef flavor were not pronounced. Both were not to our liking and IMHO need to be reworked. They aren’t good enough to stand up to the thousand tartares and crab cakes in the city. 2. The truffle fries were shoestring and served with a green sauce that felt disconnected from the fries. It’s hard dipping tiny stick fries into a sauce so I would either make the fries thicker like frites (my preference) or get rid of the green sauce that does nothing for the shoestring fries.

“Went to The Alston for my girlfriend’s birthday and it was awesome.”
Went to The Alston for my girlfriend’s birthday and it was awesome. The room is beautiful — classy but comfortable with a great ambiance. We were greeted with a welcome cocktail, which was such a nice touch, and the service was excellent all night. We started with oysters and a Caesar salad (the oysters were very fresh, and the salad was light and refreshing), then had the filet mignon with Sauce L'Alston, pommes purée 50/50, and asparagus — all incredible. We finished off with the apple tarte dessert, which was the perfect ending. Everything about the night felt special — amazing food, great service, and a beautiful setting. Definitely recommend for a date night or celebration!

“From the moment we walked into Alston, we knew we were in for a special experience.”
From the moment we walked into Alston, we knew we were in for a special experience. I loved that we were asked to choose a vase for a candle to set the ambience—it was such a unique and thoughtful touch that made the evening feel personalized right away. Our server, Taylor, was absolutely wonderful. Personable, attentive, and knowledgeable, he went above and beyond to ensure we had a great dining experience. As a pescatarian, I often have to double-check ingredients, but Taylor took the time to walk me through the menu and make thoughtful suggestions so I could enjoy my meal without worry. That kind of care is rare and deeply appreciated. My husband ordered a steak, which at first wasn’t cooked to his preference. The way the staff handled it speaks volumes about their commitment to hospitality—they immediately offered to remake it and made sure we were comfortable in the meantime. The response was gracious and professional, turning what could have been a hiccup into an example of true customer care. Overall, the atmosphere, service, and food came together beautifully. Alston strikes the perfect balance between elevated dining and genuine hospitality, and we will absolutely be back.
