Dawn A.M. Eatery
Dawn A.M. Eatery — honest american in Hyde Park, where the Fried Green Tomatoes is worth ordering. The noise level tells you everything you need to know. There's real intention behind the cocktail list, and wallet-friendly. I M: "The pot roast was juicy and tender and jalapeño grits were creamy and savory" [$$, patio]

“Staff very friendly and inviting food. Best thing on the menu Salmon deviled eggs, Cinnamon Rolls French toast very good a little dry on the outside, rich and gooey on the inside. Overall great experience would recommend!!”

“Excellent food. Great service. Clean. Prompt seating with reservations.”

“Dawn has become my local neighborhood haunt since I began frequently traveling to Chicago. I am from Louisiana and I feel so absolutely at home here in Hyde Park and Dawn has so much to do with that. The owner ALWAYS comes to speak to my boyfriend and I when we are there or at one of his other restaurants in the city! The bartenders, JP and Tre I believe their name are, both young men with locs, ALWAYS tease me about my country Louisiana accent but they make my boyfriend and I feel like valued locals and customers. The food is INCREDIBLE. I always get the catfish, collard greens, and grits or yams. I also always get an iced matcha latte with oat milk to go for dessert. I LOVE this place. We go like once a week now that I’m establishing residency here in Chicago. It’s just a great place.”

“I’d like to add this to the chorus of great reviews for Dawn AM Eatery. This place blew me away! I live on the north side and a friend invited me down for Sunday brunch a few weeks ago. I’m so glad I made the journey across the city lol. My friend got the vegan breakfast tacos and I got the pot roast with jalapeño grits and we shared an order of the Georgia Peach Pancakes. Everything was amazingly delicious. Substantial portions and cooked to perfection! Our server was friendly, super knowledgeable about the menu and on point with everything we needed. The restaurant was also pretty crowded with a great vibe and energy for an otherwise cold winter day. The owner also stopped by and thanked us for coming in- so nice! I will definitely be back to this place, now that I know what’s going on in Hyde Park lol. Can’t recommend this place enough for legit, delicious southern cooking.”

“A great Restaurant Week pick! The deviled eggs were great and I appreciated the generous smoked salmon portion on top of each egg. The lamb and grits special was great - while the lamb was a bit overcooked, it still tasted great and the grits were magnificent. For dessert, we had the crunch cake, which had a nice balance between sweet, creamy, and tart. Portion sizes were so generous and I left feeling satisfied! Service was slow, but we actually liked it because it gave us ample time to chat without many interruptions. Vibes were great, it’s a beautiful space with great decor, but the seating stands out because it’s chic and super comfortable! Overall a really great experience!”

“What an awesome place! The owner is a delight and greets the guests very frequently throughout the restaurant. The staff are so kind and positive. The food is AMAZING. The dishes and glasses are CRYSTAL CLEAR. The cleanliness and positivity radiates from the owner down to the silverware. Great work everyone!”

“Service was amazing . We were seated quickly . We went for the restaurant week . Our waiter was extremely nice and helpful . We had the fried green tomatoes and deviled eggs for appetizers. For entree we had catfish and shrimp with mac and greens as well as jalapeño grits with lamb chops and ended with crunch cake with ice cream and brownie sundae. Everything was amazing and very fulfilling. Highly recommend. Beautiful decor”

“Amazing service!!!! The food was incredible! The energy and vibe of this place is so chill. Even the owner came by and said hi.”

“Service was great! You have to order a biscuit with your meal, you truly won't regret it. Fried chicken was tender, juicy, but lacked flavor. Grits were amazing, and I highly recommend the bacon flight and gumbo.”

“I just ate here and the food was delicious! Reservations are a must they can become very busy I went on a Sunday. I ordered the shrimp and grits: great flavor and creamy. Shrimp were cooked well. I also had the matcha latte with pistachio milk: it was originally not mixed well gritty ( too much match not enough milk) unsweetened and strong. I requested more milk and vanilla I mixed myself it was perfection! My companion had salmon deviled eggs: this is a savory appetizer and was not a favorite for me. I expected a sweetness to it I make my own. Will go again!”
