Half Shell

A cozy, cash-only Lakeview institution, Half Shell channels a casual New Orleans seafood vibe with standout $1 oysters during weekday happy hour, fresh crab cakes, fried oysters, king and snow crab, frog legs, smelt, and perch. Regulars love the friendly neighborhood feel, patio, generous shareable portions, and even the smash burger for non-seafood diners; expect a dark basement interior, possible slow service when the patio is busy, and market-price crab.

This place is an institution. My parents have been coming here since they started dating and they just celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this year. What makes this place great is that nothing has changed since, (except the prices... you know, five decades of inflation and all) because you don't mess with perfection. I get the 32 pointer, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Frog legs, oysters, crab legs, and of course lollipops for everyone. It is cash only, but they have an ATM on site

Plenty of typical shelled seafood options as well as lake delicacies like smelt and perch! Crab portion was perfect for 3 of us. 3 clusters of snow crab for $50. Smelt plate was a nice option. Outdoor seating looked nice but it was a cool night.

Been coming here forever and just as good. Market price has naturally gone up quite a bit and for whatever reason the king crab has two sizes. Large and medium… I asked for whatever is the classic since I didn’t know they switched things up … which for the record is the more expensive one ; $99 vs $79. Again, still delicious. Wife had her usual snow crab. Service inside was a little slow since patio was slammed I suspect. Regardless, Chicago classic .

A few steps and the experience begins. Great service and Great food. Crab legs and shrimp are Awesome. Happy hour is a must. The place is buzzing so plan on a little bit of a wait but you won’t be disappointed. Shrimp are huge and the cocktail sauce is one of a kind. Street parking is your best bet during the week but weekends may be a challenge.

Half Shell has the feel of an old-school bar with a warm & casual vibe located in a cozy basement. The seafood quality is amazing - king crab was a real standout with large and satisfying chunks even from the medium king crab orders. The shrimp po’ boy sandwiches were also very enjoyable. The oysters were fresh and refreshing, and other items like the fried scallops and charbroiled shrimp were solid as well. A great spot for classic seafood in a casual setting with super friendly service. Just be sure to bring cash!

Our service eas excellent and loved the basement bar vibe. Our blackened mahi was good although it wasn't really blackened at all.

If you’re looking for a spot that hasn’t acknowledged a single restaurant trend since the Nixon administration, Half Shell is your no-frills basement sanctuary. It’s an unapologetically seafood-heavy joint where the only "frill" you’ll find is the celebratory sucker that arrives with your entree—which I suppose is their way of congratulating you for navigating the stairs after a Mai Tai. The Mai Tai is actually quite yummy, though you’ll need to make sure you have a wallet full of 20s before you start ordering; it’s strictly cash only here, so leave the plastic at home. The Snow and King crabs are the obvious heavy hitters, but if you’re the lone non-seafood eater in your group, the cheeseburger is impressively good and appropriately greasy. It’s essentially your only option unless you want to survive solely on garnish and lollipops. The service is friendly in that "seen-it-all" neighborhood way that makes you feel like a regular on your first visit. Just a heads-up: when the weather even hints at being nice, the outdoor tables become the most contested real estate in the neighborhood. Your best bet is to send a scout ahead to claim a spot or try calling, though even that feels like a bit of a gamble. It’s a classic for a reason—just remember to hit the ATM first.
