Middle East Bakery & Grocery — straightforward middle eastern in Andersonville. Nothing about this place is trying to impress you, and that's the point.

The absolute best. I have been going over here for over two decades and love so many things.
Start with the 15 or so types of fresh hummus made on the premises. You will never buy store hummus again.
Really good food for a good price, some of the best falafel in the city.
Great Middle Eastern items . Lots of delicious desserts and snacks.
Grabbed a few plates from here recently: one beef shawarma and one combination.

“They have so many different kinds - lamb and potato, lentils, spinach and feta, triple cheese, artichoke and cheese and potato to name some of my favorites”
So disappointed. As a first generation Lebanese I am all too familiar with the food...food...food.
Cashier was completely unoccupied when I asked them if they stocked a specific item when her shady return delivered with eye rolls was” Did you try to look on the shelf?” I still can’t believe the rude tone and short manner when they witnessed me struggling to find something unsuccessfully before asking ( nobody in store at the time)Wow, years of buying spices here and that’s enough for me….

Really good food for a good price, some of the best falafel in the city. The bakery in the back also has a good selection including these tasty spinach pies.

“The pies were phenomenal.”
The pies were phenomenal. I absolutely loved the olive and parsley one along with the artichoke and cheese. There were so many options and I could’ve easily taken home one of each. I will be back again soon!

“A quaint little store with a small diner area attached.”
A quaint little store with a small diner area attached. Their prices are decent, the store is clean, and their goods are all pretty unique comparatively. Definitely worth stopping in to grab some freshly made pitas, hummus, and baklava as a snack from the shop or an eat in meal at the diner.

“A no frills, delightful meal.”
A no frills, delightful meal. The lentil soup & falafel sandwich were favorites. Better to eat before heading into the adjacent market. Lots of treats offered in there too.

“Local restaurant/grocery store with a wide variety of premade food and ingredients.”
Local restaurant/grocery store with a wide variety of premade food and ingredients. I come here commonly for the hand pies ($3 for one) and they are beyond worth the price. They have so many different kinds - lamb and potato, lentils, spinach and feta, triple cheese, artichoke and cheese and potato to name some of my favorites. They are densely packed with flavor, they are soy/sesame/peanut free and a good portion for the price. A few makes a great snack or lunch. The grocery store has many high quality ingredients - fresh cheeses, all types of dry bulk grains and beans, olive oils, canned goods, fresh nuts and dry fruit and more. The staff is helpful and friendly. I can’t speak for the restaurant food but i intend on eating here sometime. This place is a staple to me and my girlfriend!

“The Kufta Wrap was well cooked.”
The Kufta Wrap was well cooked. It had ground sirloin beef and lamb with parsley and onions topped with pickle, tomato, lettuce, onion, hummus, and tahini sauce. There are a wide variety of selections from the appetizers, salads, and wraps with great choices among their entree plates.

Love this place for their small but mighty freshly made pastry/deli bar on the grocery side. Variety of hand pies and fresh feta, dip, soup and condiments are great to-go options! The grocery itself is also packed with middle eastern ingredients, snacks and spices that can be tricky to find elsewhere.

Beyond the beautiful atmosphere and the insanely delicious food, the staff are genuinely wonderful! Staff like Mahmoud are why we’ll definitely be back. Truly enjoyed our brief conversation! An example of the no-strings-attached kindness we experienced at Middle East Bakery was finding additional pita in our wrapped leftovers of hummus side and falafel sandwiches. You don’t get these small gestures at chain restaurants like naf naf (which doesn’t taste half as good!) Pro-tip: The shawafel sandwich (I know, it sounds sacrilegious 😅) is truly to die for! 😍 Thank you Mahmoud and Middle East Bakery team for the delicious food and your kindness 🥹

“This place is the best.”
This place is the best. Their packaged goods selection is truly wonderful. I have tried the tapenade and the hummus and both were excellent. They also have dark chocolate covered pistachios which were dynamite! I have also eaten at the grill next door and the kufta wrap was very delicious and fresh. The store and restaurant are both very clean and inviting

“We stopped by this really great Middle Eastern restaurant and bakery on a sunny Saturday afternoon.”
We stopped by this really great Middle Eastern restaurant and bakery on a sunny Saturday afternoon. After having lived in the Detroit area for many years we found it difficult to find comparable middle eastern fare in the Chicagoland area. This place here has got it down, though. Only had a light lunch, but delicious, and will definitely return when in the Andersonville area next time. The bakery is also worth visiting, though it does have some unexpectedly eclectic items; certainly more than one would expect of German chocolate. So, with the mix of great Sharwama, other delicious fare, and Kinder Schokolade, why would you go anywhere else, I ask. Can only highly recommend this business!

All the spices, sides and ingredients you could need for middle eastern dishes and an amazing restaurant to grab a bite from before leaving. Got the falafel and it was perfect, excited to come back and work through the rest of menu! Also incredibly fair/affordably priced which is always incredibly welcome.

“Happened to be in the neighborhood and decided to try their food.”
Happened to be in the neighborhood and decided to try their food. It was very delicious and freshly made. I ordered beef kebab and the meat was tender and tasty with charred peppers and onion. I loved the hummus and my partner’s falafel was also very good and not dry. The interior isn’t breathtaking, but I did love their ceiling lamps. The bathrooms could use a little more care.
