Plein Air Cafe
Plein Air Café feels like a peaceful garden oasis in Hyde Park, with big windows, greenery, a shaded gravel patio, and a calm European-café atmosphere that regulars love for catching up or unwinding. Standouts include the smooth Premium Cold Brew, chai lattes, sandwiches, almond croissants, affogato, and biodynamic wine, though waits can exceed 15 minutes during school hours and some savory dishes are inconsistent.

“Walking into Plein Air Café instantly feels like stepping into a little garden oasis. Big windows, natural wood tones, and greenery casually draped around the space give it an open, uplifting energy. It’s bright and calm like the café version of a quiet morning outdoors. The vibe is relaxed but intentional, perfect for sipping a coffee and letting your thoughts slow down. I tried their cold brew and it was crisp, clean, and deeply refreshing smooth acidity without edge, the kind that wakes you up gently. It paired beautifully with avocado toast topped with microgreens and a poached egg, which felt fresh and balanced. The service was gracious without hurry, making me feel welcome like a guest, not just a customer.”

“Great coffee and baked goods. Nice cozy outdoor seating with plenty of shade.”

“Found my new favorite cold brew spot in Chicago. The Premium Cold Brew was outstanding—rich, smooth, and expertly crafted. As someone from Los Angeles, where we take our cold brew seriously, I can confidently say this one exceeded expectations.”

“A favorite place in Chicago. Always transported to another world here. I ordered the affogato this trip 💕”

“Plein Air Cafe was honestly such a beautiful experience. It felt quaint, calm, and wholesome, like a little European cafe tucked away in Hyde Park. The outdoor gravel patio, wooden seating, trees, and natural light made it feel so peaceful. Food was high quality, drinks were great, and the whole place just made me want to slow down and enjoy being there.”

“Hello flavor connoisseurs, today I had the chance to enjoy a tasteful latte with an almond croissant and a biodynamic wine. The coffee has a deep smooth aroma and I will say the pastry is perfect (not a lot of added sugar). The wine is great, it had a natural flavor which is hard to find among retail wines and very common among house made wines; give it a try. I will definitely return!”

“The food and drinks are very good. We were very lucky to grab two seats at a communal table. This cafe is located on the UChicago campus and was swarmed with college students. It is extremely busy. The line was out the door as soon as we sat down. Highly recommend not driving here. There is an outdoor patio. They are cashless (not my favorite policy, as it limits who is able to dine there).”

“Coffee is delicious and outdoor seating is cute, environment is not as friendly or welcoming.”
