Monarch & Lion, A British Restaurant — clean, consistent bar & grill in Streeterville. Old-school in the best sense, with zero pretense. Strong bar program alongside the food. Leonardo Tanoue: "The India dishes were also super well seasoned and tasty, just the right amount of spicy level"

Honestly, the food was ok. Definitely not up to par for the prices you are paying.

“Elevated English pub vibes and food items.”
Elevated English pub vibes and food items. Our server was Allan and he was awesome. Very helpful when suggesting dishes and wine. He was also very attentive throughout the meal. The food was spectacular as well. We had the prime rib sandwich, mushroom and truffle pot pie, 1000 layer potato, Caesar salad, and sticky coffee cake.

I love how cozy and moody this restaurant is - great for a date night or girls night. It's also welcoming for children, with a pretty decent kids menu, which you don't always see at restaurants like this. The food was delicious and the drinks are a hit. I highly recommend this place, and be sure to ask for Alan. Best server ever!! He had great energy and recommendations.

“This place is a gem.”
This place is a gem. Really loved the food, and the service was top notch. Not a fan of the bangers portion of the bangers and mash, but the scotch egg and the fish and chips are so good. Our server steered us in the right direction with our meal and everything was amazing. If you ever get a chance to stop in definitely do so. Our server Allen was absolutely the best. If you have the option to have him as your server, I highly recommend you ask for him. Will be recommending this place to everyone I know!

“We loved everything we had.”
We loved everything we had! There's not many British restaurants around and some of the dishes like the Scottish Egg and the Fish and Chips were some of the best we ever had. The India dishes were also super well seasoned and tasty, just the right amount of spicy level. We'll be coming back!

“This is an excellent rendition of a traditional english pub reminiscent of my visits to UK.”
This is an excellent rendition of a traditional english pub reminiscent of my visits to UK. However, this is much more upscale and modern vibe with rich dark wood and high ceilings. The food here was fantastic. Their scotch egg using venison was what I expected. Crunchy breading on the outside and the tender meat was not gamey at all, and honestly would not have known it was venison if not mentioned. The soft boiled egg was perfectly prepared and adding course mustard to each bite gave it a nice zing. But their redition of shepards pie using minced lamb and indian-inspired spices was a truly unique experience. Blending indian flavors and a hearty butter mash elevated this pie. A definite must try for blokes that miss traditional UK dishes.

“We were looking for a place to have a late lunch near the Riverwalk.”
We were looking for a place to have a late lunch near the Riverwalk. Being November many places were closed. We stumbled on this pub and were delighted, when we stepped, in to see it’s a very tastefully designed British themed pub! At 3pm it was uncrowded and wonderfully quiet. The service and food were first rate and reasonably priced. With bookshelf lined walls and authentic British tableware the atmosphere is lovely.

“Fantastic Happy Hour.”
Fantastic Happy Hour! Great fish filet sandwich and chips (fries). Hot, fresh, crispy. Delicious blend of textures and flavors. From fresh bun to creamy tartar sauce to shredded lettuce and the biggest flakiest piece of white fish. Add a Pimm’s Cup or chilled glass of Sauvignon blanc for $10. Attentive service, fresh food, great value.

“Some of the best lamb I’ve had anywhere.”
Some of the best lamb I’ve had anywhere! Also, the rice was very fragrant and delicious - it’s very uncommon to find basmati rice in restaurants but this one was cooked perfectly.

“A lot of Americans sleep on British fare to their detriment.”
A lot of Americans sleep on British fare to their detriment. It's not going to get much better and more decadent that some fish and chips and sticky toffee pudding at this wonderful establishment. The food, service, and vibe is fantastic.

“Very cool restaurant.”
Very cool restaurant. Indian and British cuisine. Great food. Salad was beautiful with delicious chicken. Brisket burger was delicious. Big, potato French fries. The restaurant itself was beautiful. The bar was great. The tables are very large with nice, large chairs. Wheelchair entrance is to the east of the front door and somewhat difficult to use, especially if you're alone in your chair.

We were looking for a place to eat nearby, and after a quick search, we decided to try Monarch & Lion — and it didn’t disappoint! Since we weren’t too hungry, we grabbed seats at the bar and ordered a few small plates to share. The fish and chips were absolutely delicious and the highlight of the meal. The truffle mac and cheese was good, though not particularly memorable, and the fries were solid. The drinks were excellent, and the service was friendly and attentive. Definitely worth a visit — and do yourself a favor: don’t miss the fish and chips!
