“We’d heard great things about it, and while it felt a bit heavy for a starter, the combo of spiced lamb and the yogurt dip was lovely”

“Incredible food, drinks, and staff.”
Incredible food, drinks, and staff. I genuinely cannot wait to go back and try some more amazing food. The oxtail pot pie was one of the best things I've ever eaten.

Everything everyone says about the food is true get the pot pie and the steak tartare. Incredible. Leo was especially awesome behind the bar. Funny, friendly, super helpful with making the right choices and coursing everything just right. If you can get a spot with him you'll be all set.

“Got here right when the doors opened and snagged bar seats for three, already a win.”
Got here right when the doors opened and snagged bar seats for three, already a win. The bartender and waitress were absolutely amazing and made the whole experience even better. Espresso martinis were perfect, the rib dip literally melts in your mouth, and the samosas are a must. The mussels were also incredibly good. And do not skip the sticky date cake, it’s an absolute MUST. Everything lived up to the hype. Can’t wait to come back.

It would be easier to tell you what ISN'T amazing on this menu than what is: EVERYTHING is good. The sticky date cake for dessert will knock you over like an anime character. It's the perfect topper to what has to be the best dinner date place in the city.

“Armitage Alehouse delivered an exceptional dining experience from start to finish.”
Armitage Alehouse delivered an exceptional dining experience from start to finish. Though the space is small and cozy, it is absolutely worth the wait. Every staff member—from the hostess to the bus team—was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, setting the tone for a wonderful afternoon. The food was outstanding and thoughtfully prepared, with bold, well-balanced flavors throughout. The restaurant is known for its pot pies and tikka masala, and it’s easy to understand why. We enjoyed the chicken tikka masala and the NY strip steak, both of which were excellent choices. Our sides—the mashed potatoes and broccoli—were equally impressive. The broccoli, in particular, was elevated by a rich butter sauce that made it truly memorable. Dessert was a highlight. The sticky date cake was phenomenal and a must-order, offering a decadent finish that exceeded expectations. Special recognition goes to Alyssa, our bartender, whose knowledge of local beers was impressive, and Albany, our server, whose attentiveness and care reflected the restaurant’s commitment to hospitality. The attention to detail throughout the evening did not go unnoticed. We were thoroughly impressed with Armitage Alehouse and look forward to returning soon.

“Great food; great service; great atmosphere.”
Great food; great service; great atmosphere. Salads are fantastic and the miso glazed black cod, shrimp tinks masala and steak and ale pie standouts. Leave room for the sticky date cake. Expect to spend around $100 a person with drinks.

“Armitage alehouse is one the best restaurants in the city.”
Armitage alehouse is one the best restaurants in the city. Stopped by a Sunday afternoon and scored a booth! I ordered the turmeric and tequila drink which is always incredible. My bae and I ordered a full smoked trout cedar salad, lamb confit pie, and sticky date cake w espresso martini! The staff were kind enough to split the espresso martini in two so we could share. So romantic, amazing food, amazing atmosphere/aesthetics. If there are no reservations available, just try walking in. I’m dying to try the duck and morel pie but I haven’t made it when they are avail.

“Another classy tavern from the Hogsalt team.”
Another classy tavern from the Hogsalt team. Managed to score a last-minute brunch reservation purely by luck. I fell in love with Au Cheval’s burgers during my last trip to Chicago, so I had to make a stop here. Both to test the burger lineage and to finally try that famous sticky date cake. The space was split into two distinct vibes. A front section with a bar and a few booths, and a main dining room in the back. With a reservation, we snagged a nice booth in the back, and the service was super friendly throughout the afternoon. The menu flirted between British tavern food and Indian dishes, so we kicked things off with the charred naan. We’d heard great things about it, and while it felt a bit heavy for a starter, the combo of spiced lamb and the yogurt dip was lovely. For mains, we split the wagyu burger and a pot pie. The burger had a really solid smash patty with just the right amount of grease and crispy lace edges, though I did wish they’d toasted the buns a bit more to give it some structure. The pot pie was satisfying, but not exactly what we imagined. They rotate fillings daily, and we opted for the Steak & Ale, which came looking impressive with a huge marrow bone jutting out. Conceptually cool, but since the pie filling was already soft, the marrow didn't add much noticeable flavor or textural contrast. It just felt a bit redundant. The sticky date cake, however, was flawless. Totally agree with the consensus that this is one of the best desserts in the city. Addictively deep brown butter aroma, a nutty base, and a complete sticky glaze to push it into full indulgence.

“If you’re looking for a pub that feels like it was ripped straight out of a Victorian novel but...”
If you’re looking for a pub that feels like it was ripped straight out of a Victorian novel but with better lighting and significantly more butter, Armitage Alehouse is it. We waltzed in on a Friday afternoon expecting a crowd, but the universe (and maybe the alehouse gods) smiled on us. We were sat at the bar, only a 10 minute wait. Now, let’s talk food. The cheeseburger? Absolute sorcery. It’s like they took the DNA of every mediocre burger I’ve ever had in my life and said, “never again.” Perfectly cooked, juicy, and fully of flavors that make you rethink all your life choices up to this point. My husband got the spiced lamb pie, which he described as basically what would happen if comfort food went to Oxford and graduated with honors. The flaky crust alone deserves its own fan club, but the filling? Rich, warming, subtly spiced, like being hugged by a charming British uncle who may or may not have fought in the Spice Wars. And then came the sticky date cake. Oh, sweet mercy. If you don’t order it, you are actively choosing sadness. I’m not kidding when I say I teared up upon its arrival. I had been waiting for this moment for years. It’s sticky, it’s sweet, it’s decadent and buttery, but somehow not too heavy. It’s the kind of dessert that could single-handedly end family feuds. I have been dreaming of it and I will continue to. Armitage Alehouse isn’t just a meal, it’s an experience. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Would recommend to my worst enemy just so they know what joy feels like.
