Burt's Deli
Burt's Deli — among the best deli in Libertyville. Flavors that haven't been adjusted for mass appeal. Hospitality you can feel from the door. Easy on the wallet, owner on site. Casey Calderwood: "The sandwich was piled high with tender, perfectly seasoned pastrami, easily one of the best I have had" [$$]

“It's amazing what you can stumble across when using Google/Google Maps. I actually discovered this place roughly 3 years ago but just never got around to trying them until late last month. With its numerous high ratings and rave reviews, you can kinda tell that you're gonna be in for a real treat especially when my old man & I first walked in. The lady behind the counter was very friendly & welcoming. Cozy indeed with only a few tables but were lucky to have gotten one after a couple of customers sitting received their take-out orders. When I saw all the pics and newspaper articles on the wall, we knew we were gonna love this place. So for the very first sandwich experience here, my dad & I both went with The Yummie and let the owner (who's down-to-Earth friendly) make it their way with everything listed. After that first bite, I was in heaven. The combo of hot pastrami & corn beef w/melted Swiss, mustard and horseradish between 2 pieces of rye bread🤤................MMM MMM MMMM, YUMMY!! The Yummie is the greatest sandwich I've ever had in my entire life. The portion size is just right and not too big or too little for the price and the meat is so juicy and flavorful. Burt's Deli is an absolute gem and truly one of the greatest finds I've ever made. Burt's had me sold in a heartbeat and my dad agreed he'd love to come back soon. My old man who's a retired 20-year navy vet was born & raised in eastern PA. As you know, PA is hoagie & cheesesteak country but has always loved corned beef and pastrami as well. Since the hours are pretty limited, we'll definitely have to plan another trip back here soon. My dad's retired but doesn't drive since he's legally blind and I work overnight so time will tell but we both agreed that another visit needs to be very soon. There's some sadness to go with this post, though. I've heard that the owner wants to retire soon and nobody in the family wants to continue running the business. I really hope this landmark deli can remain open for many years to come. I This venue is sooo good that if I could rate them at 7 or 8⭐️s, I would. There are other sandwiches I'd love to try but this might be one of those things to where I show up again and my craving leads to another Yummy. Burt's is an absolute must and The Yummie is a smash hit.”

“The yummy is truly amazing staff is amazing as well and food again I highly recommend! Better than mannys! I know where I’m going all the time now”

“The yummy was phenomenal and honestly better than some of the big name NY delis in my opinion. Super friendly and funny staff, generous portions and good quality food.”

“Great sandwich.. owner was a pleasure to speak too... he was always engaging with the customers... they close early on Saturday but even after they were "closed" he welcomed customers in and continued to interact with them.”

“I’m a foodie and I’m a fat guy and this has to be the best sandwich that I’ve ever had hands-down in 48 years of living you will not be disappointed”

“I was on my way thinking this was a new spot for me to go. Once I walked in I remembered being here. The smell was so good. Seeing all the meats they have was good too. I was pleasantly greeted. I had mentioned I had not been there for awhile. I was given a pickle. It has a really good taste. I got the YUMMY. Guess what? It was really yummy! I highly recommend you try this gem which you probably drove past a million times and didn't know they were there.”

“What a gem!! small Jewish deli in a strip mall, I’m jealous libertyville lucky to have a jewish deli like Burt’s!! 5 stars all around. They have been serving up platinum standard corned beef and pastrami sandwiches since 1975 when Burt opened the place, which is now run by his Son and Grandson amazing humans! They have a lot of passion for what they do. Their service is top tier and warmth and friendliness and they make you feel like you've stopped in to visit with family for a bite. The Yummy sandwiche honestly one of the best sandwiches l've had. It was hot and stacked with meats on excellent rye bread with mustard and melt cheese phenomenal. Both corned beef and pastrami was so warm and tender melt in your mouth came with 2 speared pickle which was perfect! My mouth is watering just writing this review thinking about it. It’s Definitely worth the $15 it’s stacked with so much MEATS!! I watched him slice the pastrami and corned beef and assemble the sandwich along with plenty of conversation and wise cracks. Very personable guy and very Chicago, in my opinion Bert’s deli is way more superior then Manny‘s deli in the city, mannys has dry meats and stale bread!! and it’s also definitely 100x more superior than Kaufman‘s in Skokie!! I will definitely be making the drive out for the yummy anytime I’m craving a corned beef and pastrami sandwich! 100% Recommend!!”

“There is nothing better than a family owned deli with the best sandwiches in all of Lake County. “Home of the Yummy” - get it!”

“This little neighborhood gem is 5 stars on every turn. They have been serving up gold standard corned beef and pastrami sandwiches since 1975 when Burt opened the place, which is now run by his son. As someone who is not a fan of pastrami or corned beef , I went in thinking I was going to do a Turkey breast sandwich. Nope! The owner encouraged me to taste their corned beef and it was love at first bite. My friend and I split a sandwich and it was truly Chefs kiss! The service was top tier and warmth and friendliness and they make you feel like you’ve stopped in to visit with family for a bite.”

“If you like corned beef and pastrami check this place out.”

“Update 2025: still the best Jewish deli in Lake County!!! Burt's deli is an authentic Chicago Jewish deli serving fresh sliced deli meats and homemade cold case deli sides. Now in its second generation of ownership, Burt's son Ralph keeps the traditions of fun wisecracking counter service with great quality ingredients going. It's not cheap (but its not Subway either), but like with all great Jewish delis, the premium price is offset by quality and quantity and is quite in line with any deli. Try Ralphs signature sandwich the "Yummy", a corned beef and pastrami combination with melted cheese and a schmeer of horseradish on fresh rye bread. It's one of my top 10 sandwiches in Chicago. Burt's deli is a small and cozy place, and will take you back to the day's when neighborhood delis like this were all over the city. Updated reviews 2019: still great, been a customer for over 15 years now. Never a dull moment! 2021 still AMAZING!! 2022 yup! same Ralph, same great food!”
