Peking Chinese Food
A longtime Old Town favorite, Peking Chinese Food wins regulars with crispy, juicy orange chicken, generous dumplings, pork lo mein, hot and sour soup, and sesame chicken, plus friendly service and quick takeout. Its modest, dated storefront is mostly geared toward carryout, with a few quiet tables; portions often feed multiple meals and offer strong value, though some reviewers report inconsistent fried rice, shrimp portions, or pricing.

“Came here reluctantly because of the < 4 star rating, but was delightfully—and deliciously—surprised by the orange chicken, pork lo mein, spring rolls, and hot and sour soup. Staff is very friendly, service is fast, and food was very, very good.”

“Best Chinese food in the city—hands down. Everything is consistently delicious. I usually keep it simple with a combo fried rice, egg roll, crab rangoon, and a Sprite, and it never misses. Fresh, flavorful, and satisfying every single time. I honestly can’t say enough good things about this place. Highly recommend.”

“Came here for lunch (only a little more than $10) the other day and really enjoyed their orange chicken. It was crispy, juicy, and had the right amount of sweet, tangy, and spicy cooked with actual orange. So yummy! Will be back!”

“Over priced for the portion. I ordered a large fried rice and the box was small and they had the nerve to not fill the little box with the fried rice. First time and last.”

“Prior to my arrival, there was a customer already complaining about a duplicate Charge on his account Now this is the first time I have ate from this location I usually Get delivery from the other one that’s on halsted but this one is closer and I decided to give this one a try and this is definitely my last time going there The lady who was dealing with the customer with the duplicate charge already had an attitude after dealing with him and so I was just curious about the price for the combination and she was just very rude and standoffish about me asking questions about the prices and Where could I find The combination I wanted to purchase on the menu That’s at the front where you order after I get my food I noticed a complete difference with the way that they prepare their orange chicken versus the one on Halsted. The first thing is they shred their oranges thickly though because you can definitely still taste the orange pith And there was hardly any, but a few sparsely pieces of veggies And to make matters worse, the rice wasn’t even fresh. The only thing that was fresh was the orange chicken, which is why it was piping hot. The rice should have been as well so this Location don’t have to worry about my donations anymore.”
“Friendly staff, wide variety of selection, & tasty food. Takeout took 10 min. 5 stars.”
“This is everything you’d ever want from a Chinese takeout restaurant. Best value of any restaurant in Old Town, easily. For $40 you can feed a family. Also love the dumplings specifically.”
“It's like finding one of those mom and pops stores that are hard to find but once you know it's there you can not forget it!! I went to order a couple lunch specials of Chicken and Broccoli and Sesame Chicken. The Sesame Chicken was the best in my opinion nice and crispy like I like it!!”
“We have been ordering takeout from Peking for years, usually on Friday nights. Since we don' t dine in I can't really comment on the atmosphere other than to say it is clean and quiet. We always pick up our order so I can't comment on delivery. Over the years we have tried a variety of dishes, all of them excellent and every one of them worth the money. Even the small sizes are plenty to eat. The value of the high quality/quantity of the food is very high. The owners/staff are very polite, helpful and friendly. This place is an absolute gem and will continue to get our business.”
“Don’t let the modest storefront fool you. While the decor may be dated and the tables show their age, this little gem has stood the test of time, and for good reason! Conveniently located, Peking offers mostly carryout service but also has a few small tables if you prefer to dine in. The menu is extensive, with something to satisfy every palate. The staff are genuinely friendly, and the food is always made fresh, served piping hot, and packed with flavor. Portions are generous, and prices are more than fair. I highly recommend the Crab Rangoon! Simply put: this is the best Chinese food I’ve had. Definitely will return.”
“The family is wonderful & their food fantastic, going for over 20 years.”
“Really liked this place today. The food was incredible, the lady behind the counter was courteous and quick, and the place was quiet and non-distracting. My only notes are as follows: 1. The portion I received was quite large. I'm a bit of a bigger guy and I could not finish the last third of my meal. The rice was a good portion but my General Tso's Chicken had to be about 2 whole servings. My Hot and Sour Soup (all incredibly delicious by the way) would have worked much nicer as a cup instead of the full bowl on that lunch special. 2. The vibe of the place doesn't have a ton going for it. It's very clean but the tables and chairs could use replacing for a more comfortable experience. I noticed a table with paper under the legs to keep it steady. I LOVED, however: 1. That Egg Roll and Fried Rice. Y'all must've made it with magic or something. I want to learn how to cook like THAT. So good. The rice was perfectly made and the egg roll was so crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Literally perfection. 2. Y'all's presentation was very nice. The plates of food were beautiful to look at. I can tell that whoever is plating in the kitchen cares about what goes out and how. I have much respect for you. 3. This one might be controversial but I loved that there was no horrible music playing over speakers. I came in while it was still pretty quiet and it was very peaceful, even with the other customers and the sounds of the kitchen. It sent a message to me saying, "we trust you enough to hear what's happening in our space". Anyways, I'll be back. It's close to my church so maybe it can be a semi-regular Sunday thing. I look forward to seeing what else comes out of that kitchen. :D”
