Au Cheval — top-tier american in West Loop. Order the Burgers. The atmosphere is half the draw here. Phoon: "Super juicy patties, fresh and well-balanced salad, and the hash browns were next level"

“I would have skipped the bacon.”
I would have skipped the bacon. It was a little too sweet. Everything else was fantastic! Great service and atmosphere. Waited about 45 mins on a Monday afternoon.

“The staff was very friendly and welcoming.”
The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is very lively, they play great music, and the decor gives a cozy and warm ambience. I appreciate that our server informed us that the single cheeseburger had two patties, and the double has three. Both were delicious, especially with the bacon. The bacon is incredible and worth adding to your order. Additionally, the wait can be long (they told us it’d be 15-30 minutes at 3:30 on a Sunday) but we only waited 15. The service was incredibly quick, so it’s worth waiting overall!

“So many people had told me that I needed to try Au Cheval for their burger.”
So many people had told me that I needed to try Au Cheval for their burger! It was fantastic! Definitely one of the best burgers I’ve ever had! Incredibly flavorful and juicy. The Bloody Mary was also excellent. I had heard about the usual wait time, so I decided to try to go around 11am on a Saturday and since it was just me I was able to sit at the bar right away, but there were still a couple tables open. By the time I left, there was a wait.

“Hands down one of the best burgers in Chicago.”
Hands down one of the best burgers in Chicago. Super juicy patties, fresh and well-balanced salad, and the hash browns were next level. This was the only burger spot I came back to on my trip. Expect a wait during peak times (I waited 45–60 mins during the Chicago Marathon), but weekday afternoons are much easier. 100% worth it.

“Returned here after my initial visit 10 years ago and everything was just as good or better than I remembered.”
Returned here after my initial visit 10 years ago and everything was just as good or better than I remembered. They still make a stellar burger, and having all kinds of eggs to eat is always a pleasure. This time around we had scrambled eggs with foie gras and it was incredible. I will be thinking about that dish for another 10 years. There was a really long wait to get a table, but in fairness we were there on New Years Day. The space is as hip and convivial as one could ask for, while still managing to have that unpretentious diner vibe. This really is one if the best places to eat in Chicago if not the entire US. Well done keeping it going.

“Walked in by myself on a Tuesday around 4:30 PM and was promptly seated at the bar.”
Walked in by myself on a Tuesday around 4:30 PM and was promptly seated at the bar. Note that parties of 2 and more should expect to wait; they are BOOKED AND BUSY! I ordered the single cheeseburger with fried egg added, french fries, and a 1/2 order of the roasted marrow bones, along with an espresso martini (with vodka, not bourbon). The food was INCREDIBLE. I used the beef cheek marmalade from the roasted bone marrow and added it to the burger - chef’s kiss!!!

“The food is amazing and worth all the praise it gets.”
The food is amazing and worth all the praise it gets. We got a burger with egg and bacon. The thick cut bacon was delicious. Best burger I have ever had. My only complaint was we waited 2 hours (which was expected) but the restaurant is a bit cramped with limited seating and it was hard to get around without feeling like you were in someone’s way. Fair prices and delicious food make it worth 5 stars still.

“Watching Mark Weins video brought me here.”
Watching Mark Weins video brought me here. Busy. Hip. I came here on a Friday, but I was just by myself, and asked for a bar seat, and was seated right away! I overheard that others had an hour wait. Definitely recommend a reservation if not coming alone. I had my heart set on the burger, and quickly ruined any other burger that I might have after having this one. I got the egg & bacon. OMG. The bacon. Peppery, so if you're not a fan of pepper, skip it. The maple flavor adds some sweet profile to the burger, melding well with the savory components of the burger. The beef is well cooked. The pickles give a good hint of the sourness. It's going to be difficult to find a burger that competes. The fries are crispy, and the garlic aioli accompanying it really added to the fries. Not overly salted, which I appreciated. The service was prompt, professional, and friendly. I am happy that I carved out a plan to come here, being a visiting Mainer. It does kind of bleed the wallet a bit, but the quality speaks for itself. I definitely recommend coming here.

“My husband has been wanting to have an Au Cheval burger for years, and our experience blew us away.”
My husband has been wanting to have an Au Cheval burger for years, and our experience blew us away. They don't take reservations, and we did have to wait an hour and twenty minutes but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Au Cheval's burger is the absolute best burger either of us has had. It's not a frou frou burger - it's a traditional classic burger done perfectly. It's juicy but it doesn't make the bun soggy or wet. The dijonaise is a perfect sauce for this burger. The bacon is the best I've ever had. Every element of the burger harmonizes perfectly with the others. The fries and sauce are also stupendous. If there was some way to give more than 5 stars, I would. Side note: the bartender made me a fabulous Shirley Temple. Also a nice dude. If you're looking for a burger in the Midwest, you must hit up Au Cheval.

“My husband and I came here for a last-minute date night on a Sunday evening and ended up blown away.”
My husband and I came here for a last-minute date night on a Sunday evening and ended up blown away. We shared the chilaquiles and a cheeseburger with egg and bacon, and honestly, it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had. Every bite was incredible. The drinks were great, the service was warm and attentive, and the whole experience exceeded our expectations. We’ll absolutely be back. Highly recommend.

Thee best burger I have ever had!! Also, very cute, cozy and intimate place for a date night. You get that nostalgia dinner vibe, but an elevated luxury experience. 10/10

“There will be a wait, but you will be treated to one of the best burgers ever.”
There will be a wait, but you will be treated to one of the best burgers ever. I ordered it with the fried egg and thick bacon, and it was perfection. The restaurant was crowded and loud, but the staff navigated the space adeptly. For burger connoisseurs, it’s a must stop!
