HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen — neighborhood vietnamese in Pilsen. Contemporary look with thoughtful details. Strong pours and a bartender who takes pride in the work. Andrew Galang: "The best meat on the platter had to be the lemongrass beef, which was so tender and perfectly seasoned" [$$]

🌱Vegan & vegetarian friendly — real options, not one sad pasta.

Creative Vietnamese Brunch with Standout Wings, Though the Egg Coffee Missed the Mark HaiSous remains an enjoyable spot for a more modern take on Vietnamese cuisine, with quick, efficient, and friendly service in a polished setting. We came for brunch right when the restaurant opened, and it was only about 25% full, which made for an easy and relaxed meal. The crispy chicken wings were excellent — fried well, nicely seasoned, and easily a go-to order. The bánh xèo was also very good, served hot and fresh with a crisp shell and plenty of filling, though I would have appreciated more leafy greens and herbs for wrapping. The bánh canh cua, or crab noodles, had genuine flavor, a nice spicy balance, and was served piping hot. The crab meat is broken up into the broth, so you do need to drink the spicy broth to get the full benefit of the dish. The beef papaya salad was just alright. Compared with other papaya salads I’ve had, I wanted more sourness and tartness to give it that sharper, more authentic flavor profile. The biggest disappointment was the cà phê trứng, or egg coffee. After having the real thing in Vietnam, I was excited to try HaiSous’ version, but the coffee was not strong or bitter enough to create the right contrast, there was not much beaten egg, and the drink was overwhelmed by a large amount of whipped cream. It came across more like a very sweet dessert coffee than a faithful egg coffee. Overall, we enjoyed the meal and would come back. There are some misses, but the stronger dishes — especially the wings, bánh xèo, and crab noodles — make HaiSous worth trying for a creative Vietnamese brunch or dinner.

The happy hour menu here was fantastic, the tasting menu looked great too if I would’ve had more time. All the dishes I had were complex but clean & well balanced. Beverage options were extremely complimentary to food menus.

This has to be one of the best deals in The City!! Their Happy Hour menu at this Vietnamese resto packs massive flavors and the portions are way larger than you would expect at these prices. Bún chá was a flavor bomb and portions wont leave you hungry. Unlike the dinner portion, the grilled pork, crispy spring roll, rice noodle, pork broth, mint & herbs are all served as a bowl, pre-mixed. But thats great cause takes out the guess-work on how to enjoy this dish. The aromatics of this dish was amazing, star anise and lemon-grass are prominent. Their papaya salad with chopped homemade beef jerky in soy sesame vinaigrette was refreshing and light on the palate. Lastly, their crispy chicken wings in sweet chili & fish sauce with garlic & scallions was texturally rich and much like Korean style sweet wings. The size of these wings was exceptional and ample serving. Ill definitely be back for more of their happy hour dishes. The staff was friendly and helpful when making the food choices!!

I have too many good things to say about this place that words won’t be enough. For 5 years straight, this has got to be the absolute consistent restaurant I have ever been to in Chicago. I am a Vietnamese descent that is always in search for Vietnamese restaurants any time I move to another city. When I get homesick(Miss my Moms Cooking), I research to find my fix. I saw this place because their gold leaf sign for their next door location stood out. Hand painted signs is usually a good indicator for me as good product and attention to detail. I take my lady here whether it’s a birthday or a special occasion or just there for the great food, we get blessed. The service is amazing, the staff is absolutely delightful. As long as I’m in Chicago, I will keep going to this place as it’s given me a home outside of home. Shout out to Chef Thai though, you studied our Motherlands regions well.
