HaiSous Vietnamese Kitchen — neighborhood vietnamese in Pilsen. Contemporary look with thoughtful details. Strong pours and a bartender who takes pride in the work. Andrew Galang: "The best meat on the platter had to be the lemongrass beef, which was so tender and perfectly seasoned"

“I have too many good things to say about this place that words won’t be enough.”
I have too many good things to say about this place that words won’t be enough. For 5 years straight, this has got to be the absolute consistent restaurant I have ever been to in Chicago. I am a Vietnamese descent that is always in search for Vietnamese restaurants any time I move to another city. When I get homesick(Miss my Moms Cooking), I research to find my fix. I saw this place because their gold leaf sign for their next door location stood out. Hand painted signs is usually a good indicator for me as good product and attention to detail. I take my lady here whether it’s a birthday or a special occasion or just there for the great food, we get blessed. The service is amazing, the staff is absolutely delightful. As long as I’m in Chicago, I will keep going to this place as it’s given me a home outside of home. Shout out to Chef Thai though, you studied our Motherlands regions well.

“My third visit, and it never disappoints.”
My third visit, and it never disappoints! The food is absolutely delicious — from the fresh veggies to the perfectly cooked meats and seafood, every bite was bursting with flavor. The cocktails were just as impressive! I loved the Wagyu beef fat–washed lemongrass cocktail! Great bartenders, great vibes. Highly recommend this spot.

“We stopped in for a quick bite after a long drive from Michigan and were pleasantly surprised.”
We stopped in for a quick bite after a long drive from Michigan and were pleasantly surprised. The food was fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavor. Each dish had a nice depth and balance without being too heavy, and I found myself eating a bit too quickly because it was so satisfying. The Golden Sun cocktail had a refreshing citrus note with just the right kick from the ghost pepper, pairing nicely with the savory dishes. The cream puffs at the end were a fun bonus and the best I’ve had in a long time. If I lived nearby, I’d be coming back all the time.

“Edit: 2 years later and I’m back.”
Edit: 2 years later and I’m back. Consistency is key but at the same time changes are welcome. Out of all the places me and my foodie girlies came in Chicago this is our favorite. Even with a local Viet girlie that took us around who was missing the Viet food scene appreciate this place. She gonna bring her parents when they come Visit her. I am gonna be coming to this place for sure. For someone who’s partner is Vietnamese I don’t often venture out of trying non traditional Vietnamese restaurants because they are either super toned down in flavors to match the western pallet. However this place has blown me and my friends away from their service to the punch flavors of their dishes. We ordered the grilled seafood platter, chicken wings and the meat platter. This was plenty of food for three person. The sauces that the meat and seafood is paired with elevates the flavor of the protein. I wouldn’t say the dishes we ordered were any kind of fusion but it was still very traditional Vietnamese dishes presented well. I would come again to this restaurant and try their drinks and other dishes next time. Thanks for changing my perspective on Vietnamese fine dining here in the U.S.

“The food, ambience, service everything was incredible.”
The food, ambience, service everything was incredible. Best dishes of our night - octopus salad, grilled oysters, grilled eggplant, garlic butter prawns and crab fried rice. The chicken wings were delicious too. The Vietnamese curry was flavorful and had the right amount of sweetness and zest to it. The whole fried fluke by itself was okay (not great). We could have skipped the fish. We were a group of 4 and ordered 8 dishes to share. Lucky we got to try multiple dishes as a group. The restaurant was surprisingly packed by the time we started our courses despite it being very easy for us to get reservations.

“Haisous meaning "two pennies" is a beautiful homage to Vietnamese cuisine.”
Haisous meaning "two pennies" is a beautiful homage to Vietnamese cuisine. We got to try their octopus salad, grilled eggplant, Hanoi styled noodles, fried calamari and fried rice. I particularly loved the cold octopus salad, grilled eggplant, and Hanoi style noodles. The aromatics pairing of the slimey eggplant texture against the smooth cold coconut cream base with fried basil leaves and onions were heavenly. I would definitely go back there over and over for that dish!

“Absolutely delicious.”
Absolutely delicious! The atmosphere and ambiance is perfect for a date night or dinner with friends. The papaya salad was my favorite for sure. It was so unique and refreshing. I’m not one to ever look at the salad options but this was so worth it. I enjoyed the vegetarian emperor's noodles as well although it was a bit sweet for my taste. The garlic and spice did help balance it. The yellow curry was also delicious and well worth it.

“Shared the meat platter between two people and it was plenty.”
Shared the meat platter between two people and it was plenty! The shrimp spring rolls had a mushy filling but still tasted good. The best meat on the platter had to be the lemongrass beef, which was so tender and perfectly seasoned. Oysters looked good but the taste was ok—I think the scallion/garlic oil took over the taste of the oysters. Chicken wings were ok, a little too much fish sauce, needed an acid to balance it more. We came here with vegans too so they had a quite a few dishes they could try. The service was good, nothing outstanding. Main courses took a while to come out but the server made up for it at the end with free dessert.

“Had a really enjoyable experience dining at the bar.”
Had a really enjoyable experience dining at the bar. The atmosphere and vibes are wonderful. The food was so good! I’d love to come back so I could try other dishes on their menu! We ordered the crab noodle dish that was delicious and my guava drink was also very refreshing. Forgot to take photos of those. The grilled seafood platter was cooked perfectly! Excited to come back!

“Had a nice happy hour last night.”
Had a nice happy hour last night. All the food was very fragrant and delicious. The papaya salad was a palate refresher as we made our way through the course of food. The seafood tower was definitely an experience. Throughly enjoyed everything. My only tip is to let the (hot) food cool down just a small bit prior to eating to embrace all the herbs and grasp the true flavors of the dishes. 10/10 recommend.

“Loved dinner at HaiSous, I enjoyed every dish.”
Loved dinner at HaiSous, I enjoyed every dish. Highlights were the wings and green beans, they were so good. The rice and noodles were great too! Everything was flavorful, and cooked well. Portions were good too, there were leftovers. Drinks were interested and tasty as well. Overall I recommend and will definitely be back

“Hubby and I stopped in during happy hour and took a seat at the cozy bar.”
Hubby and I stopped in during happy hour and took a seat at the cozy bar. The restaurant is beautifully designed with incredible wood accents. The staff is wonderfully friendly, and the service was excellent. We shared the crispy calamari, which sat on a sweet and spicy tamarind sauce. It was incredibly delicious, with the sauce providing an amazing tang and just the right amount of heat. We also shared the chicken wings brushed with caramelized fish sauce and chili. These were hands down the best chicken wings I have ever eaten—crispy and incredibly flavorful. For drinks, hubby ordered a Pilsner, and I opted for a cocktail called Cheap Thrills, made with Beefeater Gin, cucumber juice, coconut soda, and lemon. It was a tart and refreshing cocktail. We will absolutely be back again to enjoy more of this fantastic menu.
