Zarella Pizzeria & Taverna — the Mozzarella Sticks leads at this top-tier River North food spot. It gets busy, and that's part of the appeal. Service that's warm without being over the top. "The pasta was incredible and pizza was unique and perfectly crispy" — Molly Colburn

“I love a vodka sauce, but personally didn’t like it paired with the pickled peppers on the pizza, so that was a learning for me, but the vodka sauce itself was very good, for what that’s worth”
Nothing particularly special about the food.

“Great experience.”
Great experience! Pizza and calamari were phenomenal. One of the best thin crust pizzas in Illinois. They also have pasta dishes and artisan style pizzas. Take a look at our pics! Absolutely delicious food! Richie, our server, was excellent!

“The artisan pizza topped with fresh spinach, green onions, and mushrooms showcased quality...”
The artisan pizza topped with fresh spinach, green onions, and mushrooms showcased quality ingredients and a flavorful, well-seasoned sauce. While well executed, a slightly longer bake would have added a more desirable crisp to the crust. The mozzarella sticks were a highlight — golden, perfectly fried, and complemented by a rich, well-balanced marinara. The wait staff was incredible — attentive, friendly, and professional — further elevating the experience. Combined with the restaurant’s classy, vibrant ambiance, Zarella offers a polished dining experience worth revisiting.

Very good pizza! I liked the artisan one (nice fluffy crust) while some other people in my party preferred the tavern style (no crust, crunchy bottom). Cozy ambiance and busy so reservation is a must.

“Had such a wonderful experience at Zarella for our anniversary trip.”
Had such a wonderful experience at Zarella for our anniversary trip! We were greeted with a kind and welcoming “happy anniversary!” Upon entering. We had special menus that read “happy anniversary” that were so thoughtful, and each got a glass of prosecco, the attention to detail made the evening so special. The service was impeccable by Kadyn our server. The artisan pizza was DELISH. drinks were amazing. Overall had a wonderful experience and can’t wait to come back!

“Just tried this place which we had heard so much about and it did not disappoint.”
Just tried this place which we had heard so much about and it did not disappoint. Some of the best tavern style pizza we have ever had. The sausage was delicious and don’t miss out on the carrot dip which was amazing. Topped off by excellent service and great music for a great experience. Can’t wait to go back and try more items.

“Absolutely stunning.”
Absolutely stunning. A pizza style that everyone will love. I love the extreme crispy thin and fluffy crust. The Sunday salad was absolute perfection. Decor top notch. And service was amazing. Anyone who worked there was kind. Wanted to help out. Said hi. Absolutely 5 star everything. Note: QR code to pay your bill does charge a fee to use. Just ask your server to pay with them (like you do everywhere else) and you don’t have to pay it. Easy peasy.

“The artisan pizza and tavern styled pizza are both delicious here.”
The artisan pizza and tavern styled pizza are both delicious here. Tried both styles with mushroom and truffle toppings. The artisan serves as a NY floppy soft center while the tavern style is more like a dry crispy cracker. Absolutely bomb diggity good! Worth the wait.

I’m a native Chicagoan but have lived in TX for 5 years and this restaurant was all over IG so I was looking forward to dining here. The service was excellent and the food was delicious, but the pizza didn’t blow my socks off. We ordered the meatballs as an app which were great, but the meal was pricey for what it was. If I were to go again, I would try the pasta.

Starting out by saying that our server Jack was amazing- made this such an amazing experience for us. Came for our anniversary and got seated down in the speakeasy- such a nice surprise and what a fun experience ! Very cozy and romantic and it was decorated in such a chic way for Christmas. Started with the Sunday salad which you truly can’t miss- one of the best salads I’ve ever had! Then had the tavern style pizza and followed up with the banana butter cake and the seasonal ice cream sundae. Everything exceeded expectations and thy truly made our anniversary so special! Will def be back!

“I've eaten a lot of pizza in my time and tavern style (as a Chicago native) is my favorite.”
I've eaten a lot of pizza in my time and tavern style (as a Chicago native) is my favorite. Zarella nails it. Could be in the running for my favorite of all time. Keep it simple with pepperoni and sausage IMO. The carbonara pizza was yummy but the regular pizzas were so incredible. Mozzarella sticks were great too and even the salads were on point. Have recommended this place to anyone that will listen.

“Above and beyond service by the hosts and our waiter Ricky.”
Above and beyond service by the hosts and our waiter Ricky! We decided to give our walk-in luck a try for dinner before a show and it did not disappoint. A cancelation in the speakeasy opened up a table for us and the rest is history! Food was amazing- people don’t talk enough about the thinly sliced and crispy fried zucchini chips with the ranch/avo-creamy like dip- did not disappoint. Sunday salad was a favorite as well and drinks just as refreshing and delicious. I am spoiled by Nick and Vito’s tavern style OG pizza, so while it did the job and was good, it was no Nick and Vito’s! Overall recommend and would love to comeback to try the other Italian American dishes on the menu!

“Dropped in with a buddy on Sunday around 11:30 and managed to snag a table before the rush.”
Dropped in with a buddy on Sunday around 11:30 and managed to snag a table before the rush. He kept it classic with a simple pepperoni pizza (artisan style) and listen, if you call yourself a pizza spot, you have to nail the basics. They absolutely did. The slice held up perfectly. Thin, but with that proper texture that lets you fold it without it falling apart. Perfect balance of dough to toppings. The crust? Fluffy and crispy. The sauce had just the right acidity, with the garlic and natural sweetness of the tomatoes shining through. And the pepperoni… perfect. Flavorful, with real spice, not just heat. Honestly, it was a “smile on the first bite” situation. I went with the mushroom and truffle pizza. Same style, same praise on the dough and crust, but the flavor balance was next level. Mushrooms, truffle oil (I’m guessing), red onion, taleggio, mozzarella, every bite was symmetrical in flavor. Nothing overpowering anything else. Just perfectly executed. Paired it with a classic Coca-Cola from a can the one with Santa on it… and man… bliss. But the thing I have to talk about, and honestly should’ve led with: the mozzarella sticks. Yeah, I know, “It’s just a mozzarella stick.” And your first kiss “wasn’t a big deal” either, right? Let me explain. These are made in-house, and you can tell immediately. You get that hit of pecorino, the crust is crispy and seasoned just right, and the cheese pull… man. That cheese pull hits. The red sauce on the side ties it all together. They’re doing it right. Absolutely worth coming in.
