Hai Yen Restaurant — neighborhood chinese in Uptown. It wears its years well. The kind of cooking that doesn't need to explain itself. "The caramelized pork belly was not that crispy or caramelized" — Sasha “Sasha” Bratslavsky

“The hawaiian leaf sausage is a must have, and they also have a plethora of banh mi options (+ other menu options) that I’m dying to return to try”
Kind of a baffling experience.
From the moment that we sat down, my expectations had already been let down.
This was once one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants and I rarely write negative reviews. Party of 2.

Buried in the middle of the famous Argyle block, this place may not jump out against newer and shinier establishments nearby, but there is a good reason this place has lasted a long time. The broth for beef pho is just as good as others, which is a reason enough to eat here. But add good service, liquor license, and consistently fresh ingredients and you have a great place for take out.

Hai Yen is a laid-back Vietnamese restaurant with friendly service and a comforting menu. The Hawaiian sausage was a standout with its flavorful, slightly charred texture and hearty meat filling, while the Vietnamese dry noodles offered a simple & satisfying mix of meat and seafood over noodles for a homey and comforting taste. A solid no-frills spot for a hearty and enjoyable Vietnamese meal.

Overall Thoughts: This spot has become one of my favorite spots in Argyle for fresh, traditional, and flavorful Vietnamese food at a solid price. Everything I tried was wonderful and the light, aromatic flavors truly hit the spot. The hawaiian leaf sausage is a must have, and they also have a plethora of banh mi options (+ other menu options) that I’m dying to return to try. The food comes out quickly and the staff are super sweet. The inside is very simple and barebones, but spacious and comfortable. Food I tried: - Hawaiian leaf sausage rice paper rolls (4.9/5): The hawaiian leaf sausage is one of the best things I’ve had in awhile. It’s absolutely fire— so juicy and flavorful. - Charbroiled pork skewer banh mi (4.7/5): A very solid and tasty banh mi for a reasonable price- $8. The bread was fresh and airy, the pork was juicy and flavorful, the veggies were sharp and crisp, and the sandwich was well sauced and not dry. - Grilled shrimp vermicelli bowl (4.3/5): Another solid dish that we enjoyed. The shrimp was a little overcooked but the lightly sweet and fishy flavors were on point. — Price (relative to peers): 4.5/5 Food: 4.6/5 Ambience: 4.2/5 Service: 4.8/5 Overall Value: 4.6/5

“My partner and I, love it here.”
My partner and I, love it here! The best Vietnamese food here in Chicago. Since we moved to Vegas, we knew we had to eat here when we visited. No doubt, still our favorite Vietnamese restaurant. The food is authentic and delicious! Must have! Please do not come here and ask for stir fry.

“Without a doubt one of my favorite spots for Vietnamese food in Chicago.”
Without a doubt one of my favorite spots for Vietnamese food in Chicago. I always order the Bo La Lot to share because it’s customizable and comes with a large assortment of fresh veggies and herbs. I also highly recommend their Hu Tieu Kho, a dry noodle dish with so many delicious components. I ordered this when I dined in and even got another to-go! Honestly, you can’t wrong with anything on the menu, and the portion sizes and prices are great.

“The food was delicious and the service was exceptional.”
The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. The lady owner was very friendly and welcoming. My Bún Bò Huế was so on point, and the portion here was huge! You won’t leave this place feeling hungry afterwards. The price was very reasonable for the portion you paid. I would come back for sure.

Pork is really tasty and when eating with sweet sauce is much better with reasonable price. Good service and you need to be a little bit patient to wait for the great food to come out because they're small business compared with a lot of customers dine-in at the restaurant.

“Best Vietnamese food I’ve had in Chicago so far (and I’ve probably been to 5-10 places).”
Best Vietnamese food I’ve had in Chicago so far (and I’ve probably been to 5-10 places). Very authentic and delicious. I had the build your own rice sugarcane wrapped shrimp, banh xeo and an avocado bubble tea. We shared the Hawaiian rolls as well and they were delicious. My friends and I left happily stuffed after an overall delightful dinner.
